Mahasweta

Mahasweta

Calcutta, April 4: Mahasweta Devi has said it is not the duty of the government to list the newspapers and periodicals that state libraries can stock.

The writer turned activist was speaking at a convention organised by the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights.

"There are many other tasks which this government has to accomplish. Instead, it is issuing orders that are sending wrong messages to the public," said Mahasweta Devi, once a key member of Mamata Banerjee's culture clan.

According to her, such an order cannot change the newspaper or magazine reading habits of the people.

The association members also brought out a rally in College Street to protest the order.
