Editorial

Press needs self-regulation, but with some teeth

The first phase of the Leveson Inquiry which ended on February 10 focussed only on press standards. 40 days of hearings and testimonies were given by the victims of hacking, with arrested journalists and every national daily newspaper editor among the 184 witnesses. Other issues concerning press relations with the police, politicians' involvement in the media and the ethics of the industry are yet to be examined. Lord Justice Leveson, who was appointed as Chairman of the Inquiry, will also return to the hacking scandal but only after criminal trials are concluded, whenever that may be.

Judge Justice Calvert Smith described it as "the first substantial case of its kind."

Faith: Faith and the Coalition: A new confidence in 'doing God'?

On the face of it, there's a clear difference between the attitudes of the two biggest parties to religion.

Famously, former Director of Communications and Strategy for Prime Minister Tony Blair, Alistair Campbell, warned a Vanity Fair journalist off asking about Blair's faith: "We don't do God". The phrase became a sobriquet for the Labour Party's frequent spats with faith groups on a range of issues, from gay adoption to Catholic adoption agencies. The irony was that very many Labour politicians had done, and continue to 'do', God – Blair frequently ignored Campbell's all too wise advice on the issue. The story became one of periodic conflict and breakdown between religious groups and legislators.
