Safety net for night trains

Jamshedpur, Jan. 13: Railway police are setting up two control rooms in Maoist hubs of Ghatshila and Chakradharpur and will provide on-board securitymen on select passenger trains that have resumed services at night after a ban of over seven months.

The control rooms will ensure that personnel belonging to government railway police (GRP), railway protection force (RPF) and railway protection special force (RPSF) are able to work in a coordinated manner in case of emergencies.

Superintendent of railway police at Tatanagar station Ajay Linda said the idea was to ensure a safe journey for passengers. "Round-the-clock security on tracks as well as trains will be the responsibility of the GRP, RPF and RPSF. In case of even a hint of something being amiss, information will be made available to the control rooms so that the forces at our disposal are able to respond fast," he said.

Linda, who also doubles up as SP (city), pointed out that on the stretch between Rourkela and Kharagpur, GRP and RPF personnel would escort some passenger trains. Besides, separate units of railway police and gang men will also keep tabs on tracks round the clock. During Naxalite bandhs, the railways will provide pilot trains to prevent sabotaging of tracks.

Today, GRP inspector-general A.K. Singh supervised security arrangements and the control rooms on the Chakradharpur-Kharagpur section on which four trains have resumed services at night. These are the Howrah-Hatia Express, Howrah-Ahmedabad Express, Purushottam Superfast Express and Puri-Haridwar-Kalinga Utkal Express.

The control rooms can be reached on telephone (see box) and the SP urged members of the public to call up the numbers should they come across any suspicious activity around the tracks.

"If anyone finds any unidentifiable object lying on railway tracks or spots movement of suspicious persons, then he/she may please inform the control rooms. There is a special squad which will rush to the spot," promised Linda.

The curbs on the movement of passenger trains at night between Rourkela-Kharagpur and Kharagpur-Adra sections came into effect after rebel sabotage led to the derailment of the Jnaneswari Express near Jhargram on May 28, killing as many as 150 passengers.
