The 14 medals bagged today increased the country''s haul to an impressive 29-22-22, three gold medals clear of third-placed England who were second last night. India were also just one gold medal shy of equalling their best-ever harvest of 30 at the Manchester Games in 2002 when three gold medals were awarded for each weight class, a practice that has been discontinued since.
England tallied 25-45-30 while Australia were lying far ahead in the top spot by grabbing 61 gold, 35 silver and 36 bronze. The day commenced in splendid fashion with 17-year-old Deepika Kumari stunning 2004 Athens Olympics bronze medallist Alison James Williamson 6-0, by showing amazing precision and steady nerves in windy conditions to win her second recurve gold of the Games.

Srinagar, Oct 10 (PTI) Hinting at continuing protests in Kashmir till the visit of Barack Obama to India in November, Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani today accused the Centre of trying to suppress the "movement" in the Valley ahead of the US President''s arrival. "New Delhi is trying its best to supress the people''s movement in Kashmir before the visit of US President to hoodwink the international community about the situation in the valley," Chairman of the hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference said in a statement here.
He urged the people to remain steadfast at this "crucial juncture". "We have to defeat the designs of New Delhi and tell the international community that Kashmir is burning," Geelani said indicating that the agitation, which is being spearheaded by his amalgam, would continue.
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the country in the second week of November. Criticising the mainstream political parties, Geelani alleged they were working against the "people''s movement" and their policies were against the people''s aspirations.
"If these people (mainstream politicians) had any concern for the collective interests of the people, they would have resigned from the Assembly," he said. Geelani also criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying, "On the one hand he claims that those who were killed over the past four months were the pieces of his heart, but on the other he openly plays politics with their sacrifices by sticking to power.
" He alleged that the ruling party has launched a "negative campaign" through its "paid agents" to defame the ongoing movement.

The Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, has stated that the global economic recovery is fragile and cautioned that emerging economies may not remain as resilient in the wake of any unexpected crisis.On the other hand,the India Incs Government Continue to HIKE the Defence Budget as India plans to launch a series of indigenously built military satellites with surveillance, imaging and navigation capabilities to keep a watch on its neighbourhood and help guide cruise missiles, a top defence scientist said today.
"There will be a series of (defence) satellites. I cannot give youthe numbers because they are classified," V K Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, said here.
"Each year, you will find one or two satellites going up," added the Secretary, Defence R & D and Director General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
"The Army, Navy and Air Force each have their own requirement and it won't be appropriate to say how many each of them would need, due to security considerations," Saraswat said.
India has taken up development and launch of these defence satellites under its space-based surveillance programme, which has a road-map for setting up satellites for all applications for the Army, Navy and Air Force, he said.
"Now, this road-map has been given to the Department of Space and it is making its own schedule for launching these satellites. We have only one Department of Space and we have huge requirements...," he said.
Saraswat said India has already launched some satellites under this programme.

Expressing concern over China supplying nuclear reactors to Pakistan, India today said the global community should closely look at the collaboration considering Islamabad''s track record on nuclear technology. "Our concern is, Pakistan does not have a good track record as we have.
The global community has to very closely look at the collaboration," Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan said. "We have expressed our concerns at the appropriate place, citing previous illegal exchanges of nuclear technology," he told reporters on the sidelines of silver jubilee celebrations of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor and Radiometallurgy Laboratory here.
On allowing private domestic/foreign companies operate nuclear power stations amending Atomic Energy Act, he said the UPA government does not find a need to change the law. "Right now money is not an issue to allow them operate.
We are inviting domestic government owned companies as minority partners for Nuclear Power Corporation of India," he said. Chavan said the government was also thinking of providing more autonomy to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
"There is an internal debate as to the shape of additional autonomy that AERB should be given." He also said India is interested in buying uranium mines overseas to overcome shortage of the yellow metal.
"We are looking at African countries to buy uranium mines, adopting the ONGC model," the minister said. ONGC has set up a separate subsidiary, ONGC Videsh, to acquire oilfields abroad.
He said the government was in the process of drafting rules for the recently passed Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill. On the US reservations about the Bill, he said they had voiced concern about right to recourse, but it has been adequately explained to them.
"Banerjee (AEC chairman) went to the US. He had a dialogue with them. We explained what our position is.
After the rules get framed it should be settled," Chavan said.

Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab out of IPL, Kochi spared!
The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council (GC) on Sunday terminated the contract of two teams -- Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals -- for breeches committed by them.
"The GC of the IPL met today (Sunday) to discuss and decide on the breaches committed by three of the franchisees, K.P.H. Dream Cricket Pvt. Ltd., the owners and promoter of the Kings XI Punjab cricket team, Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt. Ltd and the unincorporated joint venture holding the Kochi franchise," the IPL GC said in a statement.
"It was also decided unanimously decided that the franchise agreement with K.P.H. Dream Cricket Pvt. Ltd. and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt. Ltd. be terminated forthwith based on the legal opinions obtained by BCCI in the matter."
"It was also decided to issue a notice to the unincorporated joint venture holding the Kochi franchise calling upon them to resolve all their disputes and form a joint venture company which will hold the IPL franchise rights.
"Mr. P.R. Raman, advocate for BCCI, has been given instructions to issue all the three notices," the statement added.
Racism slur now hits Commonwealth Games
Racism slur has become the latest controversy to hit the already-troubled Commonwealth Games with at least three such incidents since the mega-event got underway last Sunday. South African swimmer Roland Schoeman had yesterday condemned crowd antics describing them like "monkeys", while an English official used an expletive against Indian archery head coach Limba Ram in two different incidents.
Former world record holder Schoeman was furious at the noise during his 50m freestyle semifinal and referred to a particularly vocal spectator as a monkey. "There were people going on like monkeys.
It''s an absolute disgrace. There''s a guy in the stands just shouting, shouting, shouting.
Somebody like that needs to be ejected," the South African ranted as he was allowed to restart and qualified for the final. "It''s unacceptable to be at a professional event like this and have people going on like monkeys.
Someone like that doesn''t deserve to be here." But later in the day in a damage-control mode, Schoeman tweeted: For the first time in my life I had someone scream out as we were going to start the 50m freestyle.

The spectators have been fantastic here. But an individual like that doesn''t deserve to be sitting poolside at an international competition," he said in the micro-blogging site.
Earlier, the chief Indian archery coach had to bear the brunt of a miffed English official after their one-point defeat to lose the gold medal in the women''s recurve team event at the Yamuna Sports Complex. The Olympian told PTI that he was abused by a foreign official when he went to shake hands, a customary gesture after a match.
"When I was about to extend my hand to this person wearing English team colours (white and red), he showed me his elbow and told me ''f*** ***''," Ram told PTI. England''s archery team official, Hilda Gibson, though said she was unaware of the incident. But the English archers complained about the crowd behaviour at the archery venue though they did not blame it for their loss.
"The crowd were intentionally shouting, which is not a good thing to do in a sport like archery. In England, crowd would have been quiet.
It was not good sportsmanship. But we are not blaming them nor are we protesting," Gibson said, as FITA issued a statement and threatened to stop the competition if such incidents happened in the future.

Bangalore, Oct 10 (PTI) Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar today said playing for the country has been his childhood dream and that he has enjoyed every moment during the last 20 years. "I have always been focused towards my game.
When I started playing cricket, I never had any goals but always wanted to perform for my country and as long as I play for India, my focus will remain so," Tendulkar told the official broadcasters . He added, "Playing for India for 20 years has been magnificent.

the Union Finance Minister sought to put across a word of caution, as he said, the world economy was passing through a lot of uncertainty.He said, the financial and economic crisis was yet to run its full course and economies have yet to fully recover from its after-effects.
"Through coordinated action, we were able to avert a prolonged recession ...The prospects are, however, full of uncertainties. Recovery continues across the world, but it is uneven," Mr. Mukherjee stated.
Appreciating the remarkable resilience shown by developing nations in dealing with the crisis, Mr. Mukherjee said, "However, they have exhausted their policy buffers built up over the years and would not be able to show the same resilience in the face of another shock."
While the developed world has been witnessing fragile economic recovery after being hit hard by the financial meltdown, started by the sub-prime crisis, Asia is expected to drive the global growth, he stated.
He said, in fact, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently warned that the United States was staring at a sluggish recovery from severe recession in the face of weak consumer spending and high debt.
The growth in the world's largest economy slowed to 1.7 percent in the second quarter of this year from a 3.7 percent pace in the first quarter, and key indicators suggest "a weak recovery in coming quarters," the IMF had said.
He said that Europe, on the other hand, witnessed sovereign debt crisis in some of its countries, but that did not spread.
However, the World Bank warned that Eastern and Central European countries could face another economic slowdown if their Western neighbours cannot gain control of their finances.
On the other hand, IMF expects Asia to continue leading the global recovery.
"China and India will continue to lead the region's growth. For China and India, we project growth in 2010 at 10.5 percent and 9.7 percent respectively," the IMF Director for Asia and Pacific, Anoop Singh had said.
Mentioning that the impact of the crisis was going to last for decades beyond the crisis, Mr. Mukherjee termed it to be a a great cause for concern that an additional 64 million people had been pushed into poverty; that joblessness had increased; and that financial flows, although they had recovered from their lows, were still far below their 2007 levels.
"The achievement of the Millennium Development Goals has certainly suffered a setback. Today, we have a billion people suffering from acute hunger, a number unprecedented in history," Mr. Mukherjee.
Stressing on the need to restore the pace, Mr. Mukherjee said, "We need to put in place policies that expand our economies, stimulate investment, increase output and create jobs. We need programs that will address the educational and health needs of our people. We need mechanisms that will ensure that those who are adversely affected by this crisis are taken care of."
Mr. Mukherjee lauded the World Bank's role, as it played in addressing the fallout of the crisis.
"In fact, it is quite worrying that the Bank's annual lending will come down to a maximum of USD 15 billion from next year onwards," he said.
Mr. Mukherjee said innovative measures were needed to expand the bank's lending capacity
"We need strong multilateral buffers to face future crises, play a counter-cyclical role and help maintain development expenditures. For this, we need to quickly focus on further expanding the Bank's lending capacity through innovative measures. This may even require further capital enhancement," he said.
During his address, Mr. Mukherjee also called on the need to increase private inflows.
"The Bank needs to have an early warning system by which it can spot and respond quickly to an evolving crisis-be it food, fuel or economic. The mechanism should be backed by the resources and instruments so that when the situation arises, the Bank is not found wanting," the Indian Finance Minister stated.

Musharraf's U-turn: Never trained terrorists against India
India and Pakistan had almost reached an agreement on Kashmir issue, said Pakistan's former president Pervez Musharraf, and tried to clarify his earlier remarks on training militants by stressing many 'motivated' outfits had existed before he came to power.
'We were as close as drafting the final agreement,' Musharraf said, referring to a four-point formula floated by him in December 2006, which included phased demilitarisation of Jammu and Kashmir, maximum self-governance, joint supervision by India and Pakistan and softening of the Line of Control (LoC).
Speaking to NDTV in London, the former military ruler said the draft of the resolution was also shared and discussed between both sides 'through back channel'.
'We were drafting and in fact on the other two issues (Siachen and Sir Creek) we could have signed any day,' he said. 'We carried out the joint survey by the two navies of the Sir Creek area and we know exactly the disputed area in the land and in the sea.'
The former president, who came to power by overthrowing the civilian government of the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup in 1999, also sought to clarify his earlier statement in which he had admitted that Pakistani army was involved in training militants and sending them across the border.
Musharraf said due to prevalence of anti-India sentiment, people 'themselves' are 'motivated' and 'indoctrinated' to cross the border 'because there are gaps and it's a porous border'.
'They don't need training. They themselves want to go. They want to learn and want to go,' he said, arguing terrorist outfits such as Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT), Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammed existed much before he came to power.
'Great public support, great public sympathy among the people of Pakistan gave rise to all of them,' he said, adding, 'everyone individual in Pakistan knew that people are volunteering to go and they are going into Kashmir to fight the Indian Army.'
In an interview to German magazine Der Spiegel earlier this week, Musharraf had said that militant groups 'were indeed formed' to fight India in Kashmir. And 'the government turned a blind eye because they wanted India to discuss Kashmir'.
Sena targets Rahul, Omar for RSS, Kashmir remarks
The Shiv Sena has criticised Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in strong terms for their remarks on the RSS and Kashmir issues. An editorial comment in party mouthpiece Saamna said Rahul seemed to have "lost his head" by equating the RSS with SIMI.
"This amounts to giving a clean chit to SIMI... which is involved in terrorism and anti-national activities." It said the RSS had always represented patriotism and sacrifice.
The party organ vent ire at Rahul and in its usual style of making personal attacks, said he may have made the remarks out of "frustration" as he was not able to find a bride, while his younger cousin Varun Gandhi is engaged. It alleged Rahul's outbursts were aimed at appeasing Muslims as the Congress was losing ground and was not able to make any impact in Bihar ahead of Assembly polls.
The Sena demanded Omar's resignation for his remarks that Kashmir had not voluntarily acceded to India but had to do it as it had no other option. The editorial comment said, "His outburst is anti-national and he has to be kicked out of the chief minister's seat."

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India fell by nearly a quarter in the first seven months of 2010 and the much-publicised chaos around preparations for the Commonwealth Games has added to worries foreign firms could put off further investment.
A UN survey found investors ranked India as the second top-priority destination for FDI this year, replacing the United States, after China.
Following are some questions and answers on foreign investment flows into India.
WHY ARE FDI FLOWS IMPORTANT FOR INDIA?
India needs inflows to drive investment in infrastructure, a lack of which is often cited as restricting the country's economic growth.
Investment is also needed to expand capacity and technology in sectors such as autos and steel, as well as to offset a big current account deficit.
In 2009, India attracted $36.6 billion in FDI funds, equivalent to 2.7 percent of its gross domestic product. China attracted $95 billion, or 1.9 percent of GDP.
But foreign direct investment flows into India fell by over 24 percent in the first seven months this year to $12.56 billion, putting pressure on domestic investment to take up the slack.
WHY HAVE FDI FLOWS SLOWED DOWN?
The slow pace of policy reform that would further open sectors such as retail, insurance and real estate to foreign investment have acted as a deterrent.
Delays in framing a new land acquisition act, which would ease availability of land for industry, have also hurt FDI flows into infrastructure and other sectors.
FDI flows to India are likely to remain subdued in coming months as well, analysts said, given the shaky global recovery.
That's a contrast to flows of foreign funds into Indian stocks, which are on track to hit a record high this year.
FDI flows into India, which held up reasonably well during the global financial crisis, are likely to total between $20 billion and $30 billion in 2010, economists say.
WILL THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES HAVE AN IMPACT ON FDI?
Negative publicity surrounding preparations for the Commonwealth Games, which opened in New Delhi on Sunday, could hurt sentiment among portfolio investors, but is unlikely to have a big impact on FDI flows.
A report by credit research agency Moody's Analytics said negative publicity around the Commonwealth Games could tarnish India's image as a foreign investment destination as it reflected poorly on India's capacity to handle big projects.
The games chaos may give multinationals considering expanding in India reason to think twice, Moody's Analytics said.
However, most major corporate investors are aware of the challenges of doing business in India and will focus on the longer-term opportunities in a country where the 1.2 billion population is growing at a rapid 8.5 percent a year.
WHICH SECTORS ARE FACING SLOWDOWN?
FDI flows in financial services, real estate and power fell as regulatory restrictions and strong domestic investment squeezed out some foreign bidders for high-return projects.
FDI flows to real estate declined to 6 percent of total FDI flows during the June quarter from 11 percent in 2009/10, while flows to the services sector fell to 11 percent from 17 percent.
However, FDI in telecoms, at about $1 billion during the June quarter, formed 16 percent of the total FDI funds during the period, up from 10 percent in the 2009/10 fiscal year.
Big foreign firms have had mixed success investing in India.
Vodafone paid $11 billion for control of an Indian mobile carrier but earlier this year booked a 2.3 billion pound ($3.64 billion) charge on its business due to fierce competition and the high cost of wireless spectrum.
South Korea's POSCO has endured more than three years of delay for a $12 billion steel plant in Orissa due to protests by farmers.
London-based Vedanta Resources said in August it had reached a deal to pay up to $9.6 billion for control of oil producer Cairn India.
HOW WILL A DECLINE IN FDI AFFECT THE CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT?
The trade ministry forecasts that the current account gap will reach 3 percent of GDP this fiscal year, or about $46.4 billion.
Officials have said that India may end up with a balance of payments deficit this year given the rapid expansion in the current account deficit and fall in FDI.
If so, massive foreign exchange reserves of some $291 billion will be more than sufficient to fund the gap.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF FDI FLOWS ON MONETARY POLICY?
A fall in FDI inflows will keep the balance of payments under pressure and could undermine the rupee. If commodity and oil prices rise globally, a weaker rupee will add to inflationary pressures.
With fighting inflation is the central bank's top priority, any development that could push up prices will be carefully watched and play into its thinking on tightening monetary policy.
On the other hand, a wider deficit could lead to some liquidity tightness in the market, helping the central bank's five rate hikes so far this year be passed on more effectively.

Pope Benedict on Sunday opened a synod of Roman Catholic bishops on the Middle East, where Christianity began but is in sharp decline, by calling for peace, justice and harmony in the troubled region.
Starting the two-week meeting to debate how to save minority communities in the region and encourage harmony with Muslim neighbours, he called on the international community, and people of all religions to contribute to creating peace and stability.
"Living in a dignified manner in one's own country is, above all, a fundamental human right," the Pope said in his homily.
"Therefore the conditions of peace and justice, which are necessary for the harmonious development of all those living in the region, should be promoted."
About 180 bishops, mainly from the Middle East, will discuss problems for the faithful ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and strife in Iraq to radical Islamism, economic crisis and the divisions among the region's many Christian churches.
They come from local churches affiliated with the Vatican, but the relentless exodus from the region of all Christians -- Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants -- has led them to take a broad look at the challenges facing all followers of Jesus there.
While conditions for Christians vary from country to country in the Middle East, the overall picture is dramatic. Christians made up around 20 percent of the region's population a century ago, but now account for about five percent and falling.
During the opening mass on Sunday, prayers were read in several languages of the region including Arabic, which will be an official language at the synod for the first time.
Muslim and Jewish leaders have also been invited to speak at this synod, including an Iranian ayatollah and a rabbi from Jerusalem.
The pope recalled the history of Christianity in its Middle Eastern birthplace on Sunday and said those living there today should "enliven their consciousness of being the living stones of the Church in the Middle East."
In his angelus blessing, he also urged Christians in the region to not be discouraged by the difficulties they face.

Industry bodies favour entry of corporates into banking

Along with CII, other trade and industry bodies like Ficci and Assocham have strongly supported the case for the entry of industrial houses in banking sector.
Ficci has suggested that industrial houses with a good track record in financial services business of at least 10 years should be allowed to enter into banking sector.
However, Ficci has put forward few safeguards pertaining to exposure of applicants of the new banking licences to the property sector.
Ficci delegation led by Ficci vice-president & Asian Paints vice-chairman Ashwin Dani and comprising Aditya Birla Group chief economist Ajit Ranade, Shriram Capital MD Sunderajan and JM Financial COO Dipti Neelkantan met RBI on the issue of new bank licences on Friday .
The Ficci delegation also emphasised the need for minimum capital of Rs 1,000 crore to ensure entry of only serious and long-term players.
RBI had in August floated a discussion paper on issuing new licences and sought opinions till September 30. Taking the process forward, the RBI team consisting of deputy governors Usha Thorat, Subir Gokran, KC Chakrabarty has started meeting various stakeholders since Thursday.
Ficci has suggested that the property exposure in terms of assets should not be more than 10% of the total assets of the group.
The ownership and control of the property arm should be separate from that of the financial services business (including the bank). There should also be no common directors between the property arm and financial services arm of the group.
There should be strict prohibition of any inter-company transactions between the Bank and the real estate arm. Ficci has also recommended that upfront ownership by the promoter be maintained at a minimum of 40% with a maximum share of 100% upon commencing banking operations.
The higher upfront ownership will allow promoters to leverage expertise and provide clear directions without the complexities of managing partnerships. It would also allow them to take a long term view of their business. Eventually in five -seven years promoters be allowed to keep a minimum 26% as an end state. This would ensure balance between the need to ensure long-term commitment by keeping control over key decisions with the need to reduce operating control.
Meanwhile, Assocham has suggested that the RBI should issue 50-100 new private bank licences in the current round of allowing new entrants. "At least 50-100 licences should be given so that an explosion of competitive spirit happens, like it did with the insurance sector," Assocham president Swati Piramal said.
Assocham like CII and Ficci has also pitched for allowing industrial houses to be allowed into banking, also called for a longer period of ten-years for stake dilution by promoters."It takes around Rs 1,000-crore and time to build a business...our shareholding should not suddenly come down. GENEVA (Reuters) - The world's wealthiest people have responded to economic worries by buying gold by the bar -- and sometimes by the tonne -- and by moving assets out of the financial system, bankers catering to the very rich said on Monday.
Fears of a double-dip downturn have boosted the appetite for physical bullion as well as for mining company shares and exchange-traded funds, UBS executive Josef Stadler told the Reuters Global Private Banking Summit.
"They don't only buy ETFs or futures; they buy physical gold," said Stadler, who runs the Swiss bank's services for clients with assets of at least $50 million to invest.
UBS is recommending top-tier clients hold 7-10 percent of their assets in precious metals like gold, which is on course for its tenth consecutive yearly gain and traded at around $1,314.50 an ounce on Monday, near the record level reached last week.

"We had a clear example of a couple buying over a tonne of gold ... and carrying it to another place," Stadler said. At today's prices, that shipment would be worth about $42 million.
Julius Baer's chief investment officer for Asia is also recommending that wealthy investors park some of their assets in gold as a defensive stance following a string of lackluster U.S. data and amid concerns about currency weakness.
"I see gold as an insurance," Van Anantha-Nageswaran said. "I recommend 10 percent as minimum in portfolios and anything more than that to be used for trading purposes, to respond to short-term over-bought or over-sold signals."
ULTIMATE BUBBLE?
Billionaire financier George Soros, echoing comments from investment guru Warren Buffett, last month described gold as the "ultimate bubble" because it is costly to dig up and has no real value except its market price.
But a rising price for the precious metal has in itself generated more and more demand from investors looking for a way to hedge against a fresh recession. Gold bears no yield and is uncompetitive in an environment of rising interest rates.
The uneasy outlook for inflation, hard currencies and global growth has triggered a five-fold increase in a physical gold fund launched by Pictet one year ago, the Swiss private bank said.
UBS's Stadler said the precious metal has become a staple of investors' portfolios, despite questions about whether it makes for a smart long-term investment.
"If you talk to ultra-high net worth individuals, that level of uncertainty has never been higher in the last two, three, four years," he said. "If they ask me, 'Is inflation going up or are we entering a deflationary cycle?,' I don't know. But obviously nobody knows."
Anthony DeChellis, managing director of Credit Suisse's Americas private banking unit, said at the Reuters summit in New York that clients are more interested in capitalizing on the rise in gold prices than using the precious metal as a safe-harbor investment.
"They're asking, 'If it's a bubble, how far can I ride that bubble,'" he said. "I cannot say we've seen a spike in gold interest, but there's an interest in the phenomenon of it."
Samir Raslan, Citigroup Inc's regional head for central, eastern and northern Europe, Africa and Turkey, said clients were not going overboard on gold.
"I wouldn't say that clients are over-investing. It's part of an asset allocation, but it's not something that they are deciding all of a sudden," he said.
And not all bankers are recommending exposure to gold.
Andreas Wolfer, head of private banking at UniCredit Group, attributed the run-up in the price of gold to frayed investor nerves after the 2008 financial crisis as well as concerns about sovereign debt in the euro zone.
"We have seen it but we have not overweighted it in our asset allocation," Wolfer told the Reuters summit in Geneva, which has emerged as a major trading hub for precious metals as well as other physical commodities.
"We strongly believe in an asset allocation having a clear and diversified portfolio, which sounds a bit boring but in the end it brings the best returns," Wolfer said.

Wealthy Indians to double assets to $6.4 trn by '15

The country's wealthy may almost double their assets over the next five years, as the world's third-fastest growing major economy boosts the country's rich, Credit Suisse Group AG said in its global wealth report.
According to the report, the total wealth in India has tripled in the past decade to $3.5 trillion. India's wealth may rise by 83% to $6.4 trillion by 2015.
If the country's economy continues on its current trend, the rate of growth of this elite group is expected to rise, Credit Suisse said.
Relative to the rest of the world, the distribution of wealth in India is heavily biased towards the lower end of the wealth pyramid, with the proportion of adults having wealth below $1,000 roughly double the global average. However, only 0.4% of the adult population owns more than $1,00,000 on average. Yet, this group has been increasing fairly quickly in recent years and the rate of growth is expected to rise in future if India's economy continues on its current trend.
At the top of the wealth pyramid, there are over 1,000 billionaires globally, of which 245 are in Asia Pacific, 230 are in Europe and 500 in North America. There are 80,000 ultra-high-net-worth individuals (average wealth per adult of above $50 million). Of the 24 million other high net worth individuals (average wealth per adult of $1 million-$50 million), just over 8,00,000 are in China, around 1,70,000 are in India and over four million are in the rest of Asia Pacific. Below this, more than 330 million individuals have average wealth per adult of $1,00,000-$1 million.
From a macro perspective, the report says the global wealth, currently held by 4.4 billion adults, has increased 72% since 2000 to reach $195 trillion. Driven by robust economic expansion in the emerging markets, the CSRI estimates that global wealth will grow 61% to $315 trillion by 2015. The middle segment of the wealth pyramid is composed of one billion individuals who are located in the fastest-growing economies of the world and hold one-sixth or $32 trillion of global wealth.
In total, almost 60% or 587 million individuals in the middle segment of the wealth pyramid are located in Asia Pacific. China stands out as the third-largest wealth generator in the world, behind only the US and Japan. China's total household wealth of $16.5 trillion, is behind only the US ($54.6 trillion) and Japan ($21.0 trillion). What's more, China's wealth is 35% greater than that of France ($12.1 trillion), the wealthiest European country, and is almost five times that of India.
Robust economic expansion over the past decade has driven rapid growth in household wealth in most Asia Pacific countries. India would intervene in forex if needed: Subbarao

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India would intervene in the foreign exchange markets if needed to maintain stability, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) governor said during a panel discussion at the International Monetary Fund in Washington on Saturday.
Foreign institutional investors have pumped a record $21.3 billion into Indian equities so far this year, helping push the rupee to a 25-month high last week.
The Reserve Bank of India, whose official view on the level of the rupee is uncertain and typically intervenes only to soften sharp moves in the partially convertible currency, has refrained from intervention during the recent rupee rally.
"If the inflows are lumpy and volatile or if they disrupt the macroeconomic situation, we will do so," RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said of intervention.
A surge in fund flows into faster-growing emerging economies has prompted several to intervene to head off appreciation and protect exports.
"Our intervention will be to keep liquidity conditions consistent with activity in the real economy and to maintain financial stability and not to stand against developments driven by changing economic fundamentals," Subbarao said according to a text of his remarks published on the RBI website on Sunday.
He said India has not intervened because its absorption of inflows has increased as the current account deficit widens on a surge in imports on an upbeat outlook for growth and investment.
"Economies that have current account surpluses or only small deficits have intervened. That does not mean we won't intervene," Subbarao said.
He said the Indian central bank would continue to use macro-prudential instruments in order to maintain stability, noting for example a recent move to tighten rules for bank lending against stocks.

World finance leaders seek to avoid currency clash

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Global finance chiefs sought on Friday to prevent rising tensions over currency valuations from derailing a fragile economic recovery, as policy makers stressed they must work together to find ways to rebalance global growth.
Ministers from the Group of 20 nations repeated a call for export powerhouses, such as China, to spend more at home so indebted countries, like the United States, can rebuild their finances without risking a still-fragile global recovery.
Officials are worried a weak U.S. dollar and relatively strong currencies elsewhere could push nations into a round of currency depreciations to help their exports.
The dollar fell to a 15-year low against the yen on Friday after a U.S. report of more job losses cemented expectations of a further loosening in an already-easy U.S. monetary policy.
The uneven pattern of global growth has seen U.S. interest rates cut to nearly zero, driving capital into emerging markets and prompting talk of a "currency war." At the same time, China has allowed its yuan currency to rise only slowly.
"I'm not in the mind or in the mood for war, this is totally inadequate, inappropriate and unnecessary," French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said.
The United States urged the International Monetary Fund to act as a more forceful global overseer. Finance chiefs were working toward giving the Fund a redefined role, possibly by the time G20 political leaders meet in Korea in November.
"It is ultimately the responsibility of countries to act, but the IMF must speak out effectively about challenges and marshal support for action," U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told a semiannual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Taking a jab at China, Geithner complained that foreign exchange intervention by countries trying to keep undervalued currencies from appreciating was threatening the global recovery.
China pushed back by saying it will move ahead with exchange-rate reforms at its own pace.
"We still think China needs a market-based exchange rate regime," China's central bank governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, said. "I think the difference is that for China, we view it as gradualism, a gradual way, rather than shock therapy."
Members of the Group of Seven rich industrial nations were set to discuss economic growth and currencies over dinner on Friday.
The chairman of the euro zone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, said part of the problem was a lack of a suitable forum for bringing currency negotiations to a point.
"In the G20 framework there are too many people and too many interests to be able to find a currency arrangement," he told Reuters. "The ideal forum would be G7 plus China."
The G7 is comprised of the Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
Japan last month intervened in foreign exchange markets for the first time in six years to stem a rise in the yen. Many emerging economies have taken steps to try to slow a rising tide of inflows of foreign capital.
Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said it was vital G20 countries resist protectionism. He also said China must meet its commitment to let the yuan rise.
"I would expect that we'd arrive at a consensus with respect to the necessary direction," he said of this weekend's discussions about currencies.
GLOBAL APPROACH
Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega, who earlier this week doubled a tax on foreign funds flooding into his country's bond markets, called for a sweeping new currency deal.
"I think in the G20 meetings we can arrive at an agreement something like the Plaza Accord," he said, referring to a 1985 agreement among the world's then trade powers to push down the dollar's value. "I think we can achieve agreement about how to manage the appreciation of currencies in the G20 meetings."
Other officials said countries should let market forces determine currency values.
G20 nations have committed to a process in which the IMF helps them coordinate on policies to rebalance global growth, but cooperation has frayed because of currency tensions.
Zhou said China was pursuing policies to boost demand at home, including improvements to its social security system, allowing Chinese consumers to save less and spend more.
The yuan hit its highest closing level on Friday since a landmark revaluation in July 2005, possibly a sign Beijing is sensitive to the growing demands to let the currency rise more rapidly.
Donald Straszheim, senior managing director for China research at ISI Group in Los Angeles, was skeptical that the G20 would make much ground in pushing China on the yuan.
"Plaza Accord-style talks is truly a non-starter," he said, because it would imply Beijing yielding some of its sovereignty. "Zhou said again this morning essentially: 'our currency, our business, our pace.'"
Expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will further ease monetary policy -- bolstered by Friday's report showing the U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 95,000 jobs last month -- has pushed the dollar to an 8-1/2-month low against a basket of currencies.
Until rich nations find their footing, emerging markets will be the strongest source of global growth. The IMF expects emerging markets to grow at three times the pace of advanced economies next year.
Those countries are clamoring for greater decision-making power at the IMF, commensurate with their growing economic prowess. This has been another thorny issue for G7 and G20 leaders who have yet to agree on how exactly to divvy up power when no one wants to relinquish their own position.
The United States thinks Europe ought to give up some of its seats on the IMF executive board, while European countries have proposed a seat-sharing rotation. IMF officials are hopeful progress can be made toward resolving reform issues by the time G20 leaders gather in Seoul next month.

Musharraf accuses Nawaz of wanting to 'sell' Kashmir issue
Lahore, Oct 10 (ANI): Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has alleged that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif wanted to sell the Kashmir issue, a TV channel has reported.
Speaking in his newly formed party APML's rally in Manchester, Musharraf claimed that he was close to framing an agreement for the solution of Kashmir, as Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had agreed on a four-point plan to resolve the issue, the Daily Times reported.
The former general challenged Nawaz to present the word 'Kashmir' in the talks held between Nawaz and former Indian Premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at the time when the PML-N chief was Pakistan's prime minister. He added that he was the one who kept the Kashmir issue alive.
Musharraf added that he was not ashamed of the remarks he made against Nawaz, in which he had sarcastically called him a "clear-headed" man.
During the rally, hundreds of PML-N activists protested with placards and banners against Musharraf, and marred the political convention of the newly formed APML. While some of them also beat Musharraf's portraits with shoes, those who raised slogans were expelled from the gathering.
Musharraf said that the miscreants had been paid to create a disturbance there, adding that the protests would not deter him from his aims. He also said that Nawaz should not react emotionally, as it was just the start of the game.
The 67-year-old maintained that there was no woman in the Lal Mosque at the time of the military operation, and again held the Chaudhry brothers responsible for the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
He also repeated his comments about Dr Aafia Siddiqui, which he had made a few days ago, that he did not have any idea and came to know about her only through various newspapers.

Amid contentions from some sections that the Ayodhya verdict was based on faith and not evidence, senior BJP leader L K Advani today said the report of the ASI has been the "clincher" in the judgement of the Allahabad High Court bench. On his blog, Advani today said, "at least in so far as the High Court judgement is concerned the clincher has been the report of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
This is a report very painstakingly produced on the directions of the High Court itself." The Left parties, SP and some sections of the minority community had alleged that the court verdict had given precedence to faith over evidence.
Though efforts are on between some leaders of both the communities for a consensus and reconciliation on the issue, those opposed to the verdict are said to be mulling over approaching the Supreme Court. Advani stated in his blog that the court and the ASI had made all efforts to find conclusive evidence.
"The Ground Penetrating Radar Survey (conducted by ASI) had shown up some anomalies. So the High Court directed the ASI to undertake excavations," Advani said.
On September 30, the High Court gave its verdict on the Ayodhya title suit, ruling that the 2.77 acre disputed land in Ayodhya be divided into three parts among Hindus and Muslims and holding that the place where the makeshift temple of Lord Rama currently exists belongs to Hindus. Marcus North sealed his immediate future with his fifth Test century but Australia still need to see off Sachin Tendulkar to feel any degree of comfort in Bangalore. The Australians must win to avoid a series defeat and North's career-best 128 ensured a strong total of 478, although by stumps Tendulkar and M Vijay were also enjoying the batting conditions.
There was a familiar feel to the match after the series opener followed a similar path in Mohali, where Australia began with 428 and India closed day two at 110 for 2; this time the hosts went to stumps at 128 for 2. There is no VVS Laxman to torment Australia this time, but Tendulkar and Vijay were frustrating enough in a 90-run partnership.
Vijay cruised to 42 and Tendulkar was on 44, along the way becoming the first man to accumulate 14,000 Test runs. He was never troubled by the offspin of Nathan Hauritz or the debutant fast man Peter George, whose first few overs featured several nervous leg-side strays. George's first over cost nine, as he learnt quickly not to offer half-volleys to Virender Sehwag.
For a brief period after tea, it looked like Sehwag would define the innings. He slashed his first ball viciously through point off Mitchell Johnson and followed with a flashy cut over third man's head for six. It was an uncomfortable return to new-ball duties for Johnson, who hadn't taken that role since December.
But Johnson had a hand in the dismissal of Sehwag, whose 30 from 28 deliveries ended when he pulled a slow bouncer from Ben Hilfenhaus straight to Johnson on the square-leg boundary. That brought out Rahul Dravid and immediately Ricky Ponting called Johnson back into the attack.
It was a wise move against Dravid, who for the third time in the series was out caught behind the wicket to a left-arm fast man. Doug Bollinger was his harasser in Mohali and this time Dravid (1) pushed at Johnson, edged with the angle and was sharply snapped up at third slip by North.
North grinned at his changed fortunes, which had begun on the previous afternoon when he made his way to 43 not out at stumps. It took him only one scoring shot on the second morning to take his tally past the 46 that was his aggregate in his previous six innings; that lean patch had led to serious questions over his place in the team.
The selectors were thrilled with North's hundred, which will ensure that he takes part in the Ashes, although he must still aim for greater consistency and fewer grand failures. When he bats as he did in Bangalore, it's hard to work out how he can produce so many low scores.
He brought up his hundred with a tight single nudged to gully, and dived into his ground at the non-striker's end with relief. He picked himself up, raised his bat and accepted the standing ovation of his team-mates, who appreciated the effort of North in becoming the side's top scorer for the third time in his 31 Test innings.
North was especially strong with his drives through cover and straight down the ground, which were generally timed to perfection. Importantly, he batted with control, choosing carefully which deliveries to leave and waiting for opportunities to score, and he even lashed out with a slog-swept six off Pragyan Ojha.

- Marcus North's 128 was his fifth Test hundred in 19 matches, and shook off a poor run of form: in his previous eight innings he had scored 145 runs.
- All five of North's Test centuries have come outside Australia, where he averages 45.60; in nine innings at home, he averages 23.00.

- For the fifth time in a row the team batting first in a Bangalore Test scored in excess of 425. Australia have achieved it on three occasions.
- Rahul Dravid's woes in his home town continued: in 14 Test innings here he has scored 283 runs at 20.21, with a highest of 60.
- Dravid has been dismissed by left-arm fast bowlers six times in international cricket in the last year: three times by Chanaka Welegedara, twice by Doug Bollinger and once by Mitchell Johnson.
A similar shot off Harbhajan Singh ended North's stay, but by then the Australians were looking for quick runs to move the game forward. The spinners finished the tail off, though not before a few more were added by Hilfenhaus (16 not out) and Hauritz, who dropped his bat and looked more like a Commonwealth Games sprinter than a cricketer when he failed to beat a Cheteshwar Pujara direct hit.
But those runs were a mere bonus for Australia. The key contributions on the second day came from North and Tim Paine, whose 149-run stand guided Australia past 300 and then on into the more secure 400-plus zone. Paine rode his luck to reach 59; he was dropped two runs earlier when Suresh Raina spilled a straightforward chance at cover off Ojha.
He had also been reprieved after a wild slash outside off went from the toe of the bat through to MS Dhoni. Paine was halfway off the field when he was called back by the umpire Ian Gould, who was checking on a suspected no-ball. The TV official confirmed that Sreesanth had overstepped, and for the second time in the series an Australian batsman escaped after a third-umpire no-ball call.
Paine's chances ran out when he was beaten by Ojha's spin and sharply stumped by Dhoni. Ojha (3 for 120) quickly followed with Johnson lbw and it was a bright spell for India, though it took help from Harbhajan, who ended up with 4 for 148, to finish off the Australians.
By then, the visitors had managed their highest total in a Bangalore Test. But their bowlers need also to thrive if they are to deny India a series victory.

Companies have really participated in Edelweiss investors' conference. What kind of investor response has the conference generated in London?
There are about 23 or 24 companies here participating in this conference across various sectors. This is a combination of midcaps and large caps, but more tilted towards the midcap as we see a lot of interest coming in the midcap sector from the investors. We have had a good mix of companies in the consumption space, in the infrastructure space, in the IT space. So it's a fairly well balanced mix of companies from various sectors.
What are the top companies that you would look to get into or get out of from the ones that may be participating or otherwise?
If you just see in the recent past, a large part of liquidity has come from international players, which is out of the new allocation from the emerging market funds which are typically focused on the large caps. This money has chased quality growth, it is much more sustainable and visible and in the liquid names. Since the large part of liquidity has been coming from this kind of funds, you have seen large caps outperforming midcaps.
Typically as the gap between large caps and midcaps become fairly wide, you start seeing midcaps catching upon that and which we have seen to some extents happening in the recent past. So I see midcaps also catching up and doing very well in the medium to long term here.
FII inflows to India are at the all time highs. Do you believe the inflows would continue? Indian markets are flush with liquidity and everyone is betting big on the Indian growth story. Is it the strong fundamental that is driving the market rally or is it the liquidity that is preparing the markets towards a new high?
I think there is a structural change that has happened from the international investors' perspective. International investors have started looking at India in a very-very different way post US and European crisis. Specifically after the European crisis, a lot of emerging market funds or pension funds, endowment funds - who never had allocation towards India - have started looking at markets very-very seriously. This is the new money or new allocation which is finding home into India right now.
This is probably sort of beginning of a trend and India typically sees about $10-$15 billion kind of flows every year. This number can probably change and go to $25-$30 billion kind of range from the international investor perspective. So I see structurally the range for the FII flows changing for the Indian markets.
What is the call on the index then because lots of people believe that it might actually touch 25000 by December? Do you see that happening at all?
I think the velocity of the money has been very high. The speed at which money has come in has been fairly high. Ideally the market should have caught up in a slightly slower manner. But you can never predict the liquidity and it always comes in a bunched up manner. So a lot of money has been waiting for sideline as the risk appetite has been returning in the global markets towards equities.
