Dear Friends,

Since our last update on the anti-POSCO movement, a lot has been
happening in the Anti POSCO world. One thing that has not changed is
that for the last three months our leader Mr. Abhaya Sahoo, and our
supporter Mr. Narayan Reddy, Mr. Jayant Biswal are still languishing
in the jail. The state government has filed false cases to derail and
destabilize our democratic and non violent protest against this
forceful acquisition of our land. Even though our leader is still in
jail, the movement continues on as state wide panchayat poll
(local–self governance) process has been started. The state government
had taken a decision not to hold Sarapanch Election in the Dhinkia
Panchayat. This undemocratic action of the state election commission
which has been taken at the behest of the state government needs to be
questioned by all people who love democracy.

But in this election some of our supporters have decided to fight for
different positions elsewhere just to highlight our plight and not to
allow the Panchayat Raj structures to be left to the misuse and
manipulation of pro-POSCO forces.

Ms. Meena Hembram (46) a native of Polang village under Erasama Block
is contesting poll for the post of panchayat samiti member at
Gadakujang panchayat. The posts of panchayat Samiti member is reserved
for tribal women. Five years ago, she was elected as a ward member.
You may recall that in 2011, the state government had told the
Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) that there were no tribals
living in the proposed POSCO villages covering Dhinkia, Nuagaon and
Gadakujang gram panchayats. This was a move of the government to avoid
the implementation of Forest Rights Act 2006. The state government of
Odisha had told the MOEF that no traditional forest dwellers had
cultivated the forest land in the area for at least three generations.
However, the Meena Gupta committee set up by Union Ministry of
Environment and Forest (MOEF) had mentioned in its report 21 tribals
living in Polang village. The filing of nomination by tribal women Ms.
Meena Hembram for the panchayat samiti polls has proved the state
government's submission to MOEF as false.

While we are sharing this information our villagers are in the dire
need of medical help. Different groups across the country are
extending their support to us. The support includes the visit of
doctors and providing medicines.

After elections, the state government may resume construction of the
coastal road to facilitate the implementation of POSCO Project. We are
continuing the protest against the construction of the coastal road.
Daily around 300 villagers are demonstrating their protest at
Balitikira, Govindpur Village boarder which was started from June 12,
2011. We have been opposing the POSCO project for over six years and
our protest will continue unabated. We are in the high alert and
shaping our strategies.

We shall inform you the ongoing development here.

Kindly circulate this mail  widely.

In solidarity,

Prashant Paikary

Spokesperson, POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti
