Ron Fouchier and Ab Osterhaus of Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam accept recommendations by the US government's National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, which said key details of their US-funded research should not be published because [US] bioterrorists may use the information to cause a bird-flu pandemic.

According to the report, the assassination of Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan was similar to that seen in "espionage films" - planned over a period of many months, and including extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering. The Sunday Times quoted an unnamed Israeli sources who claimed that the killing was a precursor to a military strike, which would make rebuilding nuclear facilities more difficult for Iran, should they be bombed.

An order by the new prison commander that all attorney-client mail be reviewed for contraband, including information that the commander argues the detainees shouldn't be allowed to have, has attorneys crying foul.

Officials: Error spurred false alarm at Tucson base 16 Jan 2012 The false report of a hostage incident that shut down Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson four months ago was the result of a misunderstanding rather than a hoax, a base spokesman says. During the Sept. 16 incident, which began about 9 a.m., SWAT teams were deployed from as far away as Phoenix. Base personnel were put in lockdown or evacuated for most of the day. Military flights were disrupted. Major streets were closed... Finally, the base commander, Col. John Cherrey, announced without explanation that the threat was over and no gunman or weapon had been found.

Radioactive Concrete Is Latest Scare for Fukushima Survivors 16 Jan 2012 The Japanese government is investigating how radioactive concrete ended up in a new apartment complex in the Fukushima Prefecture, housing evacuees from a town near the crippled nuclear plant. The contamination was first discovered when dosimeter readings of children in the city of Nihonmatsu, roughly 40 miles from the reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi, revealed a high school student had been exposed to 1.62 millisieverts in a span of three months, well above the annual 1 millisievert limit the government has established for safety reasons. Further investigation traced the radiation back to the student's three-story apartment building, where officials detected radioactive cesium inside the concrete. Radiation levels at the 6-month-old apartment were higher inside the building than outside.

Cohan 13 Jan 2012 Make no mistake: Under Mitt Romney's leadership in the 1980s and 1990s, Bain Capital was a top-performing private-equity fund. According to an internal 2000 estimate, the fund achieved annualized returns of an astounding 88 percent from 1984 to 1999 for its institutional investors, including state and corporate pension funds that invest the savings of millions of American workers. It also made a fortune for Romney, whose net wealth reportedly exceeds $250 million.
