Video calls for shutting down Iowa caucuses; Anonymous claims responsibility 06 Nov 2011 An anarchist-style movement that has caught the attention of the FBI and taken credit for hacking into military and corporate websites has now claimed responsibility for creating a video that urges its supporters to shut down the Iowa caucuses. Local authorities say they are aware of the video, are preparing for possible action by the group and are in contact with the presidential campaigns about the issue. A computer-generated voice in the online video, which had received more than 1,600 views by Sunday evening, says, "Both parties are desecrating the American democracy and committing crimes against humanity on behalf of the American people."

Protesters chanted slogans such as, "not another nickel, not another dime! No more money for Israel's crimes" and "Vive viva Palestina," demanding the departure of Israeli consulate officials from the US.

The elusive leader, who has not been seen in public since 2001, urged his fighters to avoid civilian deaths, saying the Afghan war has to be resolved by "realization and understanding." Insisting his troops "take every step to protect the lives and wealth of ordinary people," he said: "Do not wrongly pester and daunt anyone by the barrel of the gun." [Too bad USociopaths don't issue the same directive.]

CIA Drones Kill Large Groups Without Knowing Who They Are 04 Nov 2011 The expansion of the CIA's undeclared drone war in the tribal areas of Pakistan required a big expansion of who can be marked for death. ...The number of people targeted at once has grown. This is the new standard, according to a piece in the Wall Street Journal: "men believed to be militants associated with terrorist groups, but whose identities aren't always known." The CIA is now killing people without knowing who they are, on suspicion of association with terrorist groups... Strikes targeting those people -- usually "groups" of such people -- are called "signature" strikes. "The bulk of CIA's drone strikes are signature strikes," the Journal reports.

It is believed the prime minister may have been referring to his closest Arab neighbors, particularly Saudi Arabia [and, of course, the US].

At the agency's Open Source Center, a team known affectionately as the "vengeful librarians" also pores over Facebook, newspapers, TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms -- anything overseas that anyone can access and contribute to openly. The CIA facility was set up in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission, with its first priority to focus on counterterrorism and counterproliferation.

Children may be vaccinated with anthrax to test if they can survive bioterrorism attack 25 Oct 2011 The anthrax vaccine has been tested extensively in adults and more than 2.6million members of the armed forces have also been inoculated, the Washington Post said. But there is no data on how well the vaccine works on children, or whether it would be safe. In 1998, the Pentagon began an anthrax immunisation programme in the military, but it was halted over concerns on the vaccine's safety. Personnel currently assigned to bioterrorism activities, including defence, are required to have anthrax vaccinations - as well as those deployed for 15 days or more in the Middle East and South Korea. The charges are based on documents -- first disclosed this week by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- showing that funds from a non-profit founded by Cain campaign Chief of Staff Mark Block (called Prosperity USA) were used to pay early expenses for Cain's presidential campaign.

Cain had already left the organization by then, before his three-year term was completed. That the settlement was signed by the restaurant association's counsel, Peter Kilgore, illustrates just how central he is in the allegations against Cain.

Herman Cain's popularity sinks after sexual harassment allegations 06 Nov 2011 The allegations of sexual harassment that have dogged Herman Cain for a week have taken their toll on his presidential campaign, according to a poll by Reuters/Ipsos. In the first sign that the claims, which date back to a decade ago when he was head of the National Restaurant Association, have begun to damage his election chances, the poll shows a drop in his popularity among Republicans from 66% a week ago to 57%. Among all registered voters, Cain's favourability declined 5 percentage points, from 37 to 32.

The world pumped about 564m more tons (512m metric tons) of carbon into the air in 2010 than it did in 2009, an increase of 6%.

Many in chilly Northeast mark 8th day without power; Conn. outages may stretch to Wednesday 06 Nov 2011 Tens of thousands in the chilly Northeast remained without power Sunday, eight days after a rare October snowstorm knocked much of the region into the dark.
