Dear comrades and friends,

Warm greetings!

May 20 marks the third death anniversary of comrade Crispin "Ka Bel" Beltran.

Ka Bel is the first chairperson of the International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS).  In the Philippines, he was a Congress Party List representative from 2001 up to his untimely demise in 2008 - first for Bayan Muna (People First) then for Anakpawis (Toiling Masses). Ka Bel, twice awarded as an outstanding Congressman, was the poorest Congress representative until his death.  He lived a humble life of genuine and militant service to workers and the people.  At the time of his death, he was also the KMU chairperson emeritus, having served as KMU chairperson for the longest time.

Ka Bel was not just a plain labor leader but an internationalist as well.  He called for international solidarity among the workers and toiling masses of different countries.  He spoke against imperialism and its lackeys, against dictatorships, wars of aggression, racism and xenophobia.  He urged the people to fight for social justice and genuine social change.

KMU is spearheading different activities to commemorate his death. Together with Anakpawis Partylist and the Crispin B. Beltran Foundation Center (CBBRC), KMU will hold a whole day set of activities and mobilization to highlight the workers' struggle for significant wage hike and the defense of their rights and welfare.  These are causes that Ka Bel ceaselessly fought for until his unexpected death.

We enjoin everyone to commemorate his death by lighting a candle in your own homes or in union offices. If your organization is holding an activity on that day, please offer a moment of silence to remember Ka Bel's heroism. A message of solidarity to remember Ka Bel's life and struggle is also welcome.

Through these small activities, let us unite and remember the martyrs of the workers' movement  like Ka Bel. Let us pledge that we will continue to carry the torch of struggle until a better, just and humane world for the workers and people is finally realized.

In solidarity,
Elmer Labog
KMU Chairperson
