When each and every point in this country is dark, one small ray of hope is co0ming down.
Thanks to the victim's family, to the lawyers who fought the battle for the victims.

policemen sent to jail over custodial death
Correspondent, Assam Tribune, May 1, 2011
JORHAT, April 30 – The Jorhat Session Tribunal today sentenced "imprisonment" to seven police officials found guilty in the custodial death of one Sariful Hussain Mariani in 1995.

The seven police personnel have already been sent to jail even though the quantum of punishment will be announced on Monday.

The police personnel who were found guilty were Kumud Chetia, then officer-in-charge of Mariani PS, Nekibur Rahman, then SI, Phanidhar Bora, ASI, Nur Islam, driver and threeconstables – Ranjit Neog, Srinath Pathak and Bhupen Bora.

It may be mentioned here that a case was registered following the death of Hussain in police custody and the legal proceedings started in the year 2000 under Section 304, 330, and 302.

Hemen Bora, secretary of the Jorhat Bar Association told this correspondent that it is almost certain that the convicted police personnel would receive the penalty of at least seven years of imprisonment under Section 302.

"It is a rare case in the court's history of Assam that as many as seven police officials got imprisonment at a time," he said and added: "This will increase the faith of the publictowards the judiciary to a great extent".
