Dalit organisations to lay siege to Parliament on November 29

KOTTAYAM: More than 1,000 volunteers from the State will participate in the Parliament gherao being organised by the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations on November 29, confederation State president K. Ramankutty has said.

He told mediapersons that a decision to this effect was taken by the State committee of the confederation.

The gherao is being organised as part of the struggle to press for extension of job reservation to the private sector, introduction of a new reservation Act in Parliament, reservation for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in the armed forces and higher judiciary, and filling up vacancy backlog, among other things.

The contingent from the State will be led by Mr. Ramankutty.

Mr. Ramankutty called upon the authorities to set up to a special commission for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes for loan waiver. He said the government had by bringing in a ceiling for the loan waiver scheme made the scheme ineffective. The authorities should write off loans without any ceiling.

He said the State committee which had evaluated the results of the recent civic elections in the State had come to the conclusion that there was an erosion of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe votes from the Left Democratic Front. The style of functioning of the LDF leadership which tried to curry favour with the leaders of the forward communities had generated apathy towards the ruling dispensation among the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe voters, the committee maintained.

The meeting called upon the activists to work towards the realization of Dalit-Adivasi unity.

The confederation also decided to take up a protest march to the headquarters of KIRTADS in Kozhikode against the `anti-people activities' of the organisation.
