Dear all,

Here is the link to an AID petition on POSCO:
http://aidindia.org/main/index.php?option=com_facileforms&Itemid=464

POSCO is a glaring example of the the unjust, unsustainable and undemocratic model of development that is so aggressively followed in India today.

Please sign the petition URGENTLY, and also spread the word, since we need to collect as many signatures as we can before the PM's proposed Seoul visit on the 10th of this month (Yes, 2 days from now!), to prevent him from making unjust promises!

In the words of our Saathi Nityanand Jayaraman, "the Meena Gupta Cmte. (appointed by the MoEF) about the POSCO project has issued a split verdict, with the majority opinion (consisting of Urmila Pingle, V. Suresh and Devendra Pandey) recommending the scrapping of the preliminary environmental clearances issued thus far, owing to gross violations of procedures related to FRA, CRZ and EIA. Another report by the Mining Zone People's Solidarity Group (MZPSG) offers an analysis of the local economy in Jagatsinghpur (including elements of the non-monetized economy) and challenges the exaggerated claims of the NCAER report about employment generation by POSCO."

See http://miningzone.org/campaigns/POSCO/iron-and-steal/ for the MZPSG report). NCAER's data is also being questioned as it turns out that POSCO was one of the sponsors of NCAER. See story in The Hindu about this:

Here is a link to a presentation on the project that we could use in reaching out to people and organisations: http://bit.ly/9yGHRO

Here is a brief background on AID's past involvement in the issue:

- AID petition in February 2008:
http://petitions.aidindia.org/Posco_2008/previous.php

- Background page attached to petition:
http://petitions.aidindia.org/Posco_2008/posco_petition_background.php

(the background page has links to a Youtube film called "No to POSCO",
photos from Jagatsinghpur, etc. which are still useful although some of the
other info. might be a bit dated as the situation on the ground has changed)

- AID petition in October 2008 when Abhay Sahoo, leader of PPSS was
arrested: http://petitions.aidindia.org/Posco_2008/

Do write back if you have questions,

Thanks,
Tatha
