However, the chairman of Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq accused the Government of hampering the conglomerate's peaceful activities and maintained that there was not need to obtain permission for holding indoor meetings.
To express solidarity with the Kashmiris languishing in jails including those arrested in past four months, the Awami Action Committee (AAC) a constituent of Hurriyat (M), had called a session to mark the Prisoners Day at Mirwaiz Manzil in old city here.
But police enforced strict restrictions on the roads leading to Mirwaiz Manzil. "In view of the restrictions imposed by the District Magistrate under section 144 CrPC, a proposed function which was to be held at Rajouri Kadal by the AAC could not be conducted. As has been observed in the past many of such functions end up in violence as happened on the last Eid. Besides the permission was not also sought from the concerned competent authority in this regard," a police spokesman said in a statement.
But Mirwaiz termed it as pretext. "We have been commemorating the Prisoners Day every year. Ironically, the Mirwaiz Manzil and adjoining areas were placed under cordon. I was also placed under house arrest to prevent me from participating in the function. I want to maintain that we had not to stage protests or take out procession but only organize a session to pay tributes to the prisoners. Putting curbs on our symbolic and peaceful programs clearly shows Government's frustration," he said.
Mirwaiz said since the Lal Chowk Chalo on Eid-ul-Fitr, the authorities had left no stone unturned to quell the peaceful protests. "By these pressure tactics the government wants to suppress the aspirations of Kashmiris. People of the Valley particularly of the old city are being given collective punishment by continuous curfews and restrictions. Such moves will only add to alienation," he said.
Expressing concern over the plight of detainees lodged in various jails, Mirwaiz appealed the international human rights organizations to take cognizance of the issue.
He said said on his direction, the conglomerate's team had visited Kathua, Kot Balwal and Udhampur jails and met many separatists including Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Khan.
"The detainees are being treated inhumanely. They have been even denied medicare and their relatives are not allowed to meet them regularly. Our movement has been recognized at the international level and there is no justification in mistreating the pro-freedom leadership and Kashmiris in the jails," he added.
