The Hurriyat (G) general secretary Masrat Aalam had called for a march towards Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani's residence in uptown Hyderpora, where he has been under house arrest for past one month.
Fearing protests and clashes during the march, authorities announced imposition of curfew last night.
The curfew crippled normal life as police and paramilitary forces sealed roads and streets and restricted people to their homes.
The restrictions were tough in Hyderpora and its neighboring areas, Budgam town and in downtown Srinagar.
Reports said that in Habak, Naseem Bagh here, police and CRPF without any provocation ventured into residential colonies including Professors Colony and beat up inmates.
Witnesses said they smashed the window panes of houses and damaged the vehicles parked in the compounds.
Protests broke out in Batapora, Hazratbal, where young boys staged protests and engaged forces in pitched battles by pelting stones on them. Police used force to disperse the protesters in which five persons were injured.
Curfew also remained in force in other districts and towns of Valley including Islamabad, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Kupwara, Varmul, Handwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Sopur.
Police said the day passed off peacefully and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere. A police spokesman said in view of the examinations instructions were issued to all concerned officials on duty to treat examination admit cards of students and identity cards of the staff of the education department as curfew passes.
TARIQ RASOOL ADDS FROM BANDIPORA:
Five persons were wounded when police and paramilitary CRPF troopers used force to quell protests in Bandipora today.
The protest broke out in various areas including Nusoo, Saderkoot Bala, Takia and Ajas when CRPF allegedly thrashed several youth. Witnesses said that CRPF men beat up two youth to pulp in Nasu village "without any provocation."
The incident bought more people on roads who demanded action against the erring troopers. Five persons including a 40-year-old woman was injured during clashes in Nusoo. They were identified as Rameez Raja, Showket Ali, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Mudasir and Rafiqa Begum—all residents of Nusoo.
Protests broke out in Saderkoot Bala against the arrest of youth. As protests intensified, forces resorted to baton charge and fired tear smoke canisters to disperse the protesters.
