Bhopal was a terrible tragedy that none of us will ever forget. However, it is important to note that Dow never owned or operated the plant, which today is under the control of the Madhya Pradesh state government. Dow acquired the shares of Union Carbide Corporation more than 16 years after the tragedy, and 10 years after the $470 million settlement agreement – paid by Union Carbide Corporation and Union Carbide India, Limited – was approved by the Indian Supreme Court. Statement of The Dow Chemical Company Regarding the Bhopal Tragedy

On December 3, 1984, one of the most tragic incidents in the history of industry occurred in Bhopal, India. Those of us in industry remember that day well, and the following days, when several thousand people died.
Although Dow never owned nor operated the plant, we — along with the rest of industry — have learned from this tragic event, and we have tried to do all we can to assure that similar incidents never happen again.
To that end, the chemical industry learned and grew as a result of Bhopal — creating Responsible Care with its strengthened focus on process safety standards, emergency preparedness, and community awareness. The industry also has worked with governmental regulators to assure that industry best practices are implemented through regulations for the protection of workers and communities.
While Dow has no responsibility for Bhopal, we have never forgotten the tragic event and have helped to drive global industry performance improvements. This is why Responsible Care was created and why these standards are essential for the protection of our employees and the communities where we live and work. Our pledge and our commitment is the full implementation of Responsible Care everywhere we do business around the world.
For more information on Bhopal:
The former Bhopal plant was owned and operated by Union Carbide India, Ltd. (UCIL), an Indian company, with shared ownership by Union Carbide Corporation, the Indian government, and private investors. Union Carbide sold its shares in UCIL in 1994, and UCIL was renamed Eveready Industries India, Ltd., which remains a significant Indian company today. See www.unioncarbide.com/bhopal for the history and additional information from Union Carbide Corporation on Bhopal.

Habitat for Humanity hosts cross-Africa Citibank build

Habitat for Humanity hosts first cross-Africa Citibank build
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – From May 22-29, volunteers from 11 Citigroup branches across Sub-Saharan Africa, Habitat for Humanity International and local communities will help build houses in Cameroon, Cote D'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia as part of a regional campaign aimed at alleviating the problem of inadequate housing throughout Africa and the Middle East.
Citigroup's Sub-Saharan Africa region, through the Citigroup Foundation, has donated more than (U.S.) $295,000 to HFHI for house building projects across Sub-Saharan Africa over the last three years. For this year, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity staff, volunteers and communities, Citigroup staff will build more than 30 houses in various stages of construction.
More than 300 Citigroup staff across Sub-Saharan Africa volunteered for the project. Sebastian Paredes, Citigroup Sub-Saharan Africa division head, said, "We are proud to continue being part of the reconstruction and development process in these countries and we are pleased to assist deserving families who would not otherwise be able to afford a home of their own. A decent home is a basic human right for every individual and our partnership with Habitat for Humanity will help families achieve this right. We are also proud that 11 of our countries with local operations have participated in this regional initiative."
The event will also commemorate the 30,000th house built in Africa and the Middle East on May 28 in Johannesburg, South Africa. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity International, the ministry will celebrate the collective spirit and commitment to move forward in the mission, by building the 30,001th house in Africa and the Middle East.
Mark Crozet, resource development & communications director, Habitat for Humanity Africa and Middle East said, "We are excited to bring Citibank and Habitat for Humanity together for one unified week to celebrate Citigroup's ongoing commitment to providing decent housing across Africa. As I visit the communities in Africa where we have partnered in this spirit of service, I am struck by the impact that builds such as these have on the people. Citigroup's commitment to making a difference in these communities adds value that goes far beyond the physical provision of a house. They are helping to build a home."
