Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar may land himself in trouble as city police have started inquiry into his alleged obscene act during Lakhme Fashion Week in Mumbai.



"We are conducting an inquiry into Akshay Kumar's alleged obscene acts during Lakme Fashion Week held recently after we received a complaint from a person called Anil Nair," said a police officer



"The complainant raised objections on Akshay's unbutton act in public," the officer said.

On Monday, mid-way between his ramp walk, Akshay Kumar walked towards his wife Twinkle Khanna, who was seated in the front row and allegedly asked her to unbutton his jeans during the fashion show.



The Vakola police on Wednesday received a complaint, demanding action against the actor’s stunt that it termed as “offensive”.



The police are now considering whether or not the ‘unbuttoning’ act warrants booking of the actor and the organisers for obscenity.

Addressing a press conference here, senior BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi said that it would be the party's endeavour to conduct the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections simultaneously. Though RJD and LJP have formed an alliance severing ties with the Congress, the coalition has two leaders harbouring ambitions for the post of the prime minister.

RJD boss Lalu Prasad and his LJP counterpart Ramvilas Paswan, both Union ministers, may be canvassing support jointly for their candidates in Bihar, but nurture a dream for the country's top job.



"Every person in politics wants to become the prime minister. If I don't say that it would be hypocrisy," Paswan says.



"All politicians dream to become the PM," Prasad says too.



Paswan elaborates that there are two situations when one becomes the prime minister. "First, when his party emerges as the single largest party with adequate numbers and second, when a coalition is cobbled up with like-minded parties."



"In the second case, a person on whom a consensus is arrived becomes the PM," he says and adds that in the past, H D Deve Gowda became the PM despite less than adequate seats since the partners were unanimous on him. But all such presumptions would depend upon the poll outcome. To a query as to whether he would accept the post, if offered like Dewe Gowda had been, Paswan says, it will depend on the number of seats the alliance partners – Samajwadi Party, RJD and LJP – manages to get.



"If we have over 60 seats, we will certainly have the strength to bargain with Congress and other allies of the UPA but the decision on who would be the PM would be taken at that point of time and the less controversial amongst us may take over," he points out.

Lalu Prasad, chargesheeted in four fodder scam cases relating to fraudulent withdrawals of crores of rupees from Bihar treasuries when he was chief minister between 1990 and 1996, has been flamboyant when he talks of the post.



"I will achieve the goal one day," he says without elaborating on from where he will be able to drum up support.



He claims that RJD, LJP and SP would pull off spectacular performance in Bihar, Jharkhand, UP and decide the future politics of the country.



Nitish Kumar, their betenoire and chief minister, however, dissociates himself from being a contender for the top job.



"I don't live in fool's paradise as I know my limitations. I am serving the nation through serving people of Bihar and that's enough for me," Kumar says, adding L K Advani is 'undisputed and unchallenged' prime ministerial candidate for the NDA.



Polls to bring in Rs 600 crore biz for media cos



New Delhi Robbed off a lion's share of its advertising revenue due to the global economic downturn, the media industry is looking forward to the general elections as a major stimulus and expects business worth Rs 600 crore from promotional campaigns of various parties.

Print media and news channels are expected to be the major beneficiaries in the elections, while radio channels and new media platforms, such as mobile and Internet, are also being used by the political parties and candidates in their campaigns, according to a report by brokerage firm Centrum.

"Elections have historically attracted viewers to the Hindi news space. Political parties are expected to spend about Rs 600 crore on promotions, of which 55 per cent would be on print media and eight per cent on radio," Centrum said.

According to industry experts, election season has injected a fresh lease of life for the media companies, a number of whom have embarked upon significant cost-cutting measures due to dearth of advertisements as advertisers are cutting down on their spending due to the global economic downturn.

Some parties have already started airing their promotional campaigns on TV, while the momentum is expected to gather steam as the election dates approach and similar is the scenario for other media platforms, they noted.



Manmohan is a wise, wonderful man: Obama
London It appeared like a mutual admiration society with President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh effusively praising each other after their first meeting.

The 48-year-old new American leader described Singh as a "wise" and "wonderful" man as the two leaders met on the sidelines of G-20 in London on Thursday night.

"First of all I should say that your Prime Minister is a wonderful man. He is wise and decent man," said Obama, clearly impressed by the economist-PM's persona.

"He (Singh) has been doing a wonderful job in guiding India even prior to being the Prime Minister along the path of extraordinary economic growth. That is a marvel, I think, for all of the world," the US President remarked, apparently referring to Singh's pioneering role in India's economic liberalisation.

On his part, Singh told Obama: "You are much loved and respected in India." Reciprocating young US President's lavish praise, the 76-year-old Indian leader said Obama had "brought a ray of hope" and the youth look up to him "as an icon".

Singh said under Obama's leadership, challenges like climate change could be met.

The Prime Minister said India and the US share "same dreams and same vision" and the two countries will like to work together to realise those dreams.

He invited Obama to India, saying a warm welcome awaits him there.

Obama acknowledged the role played by Singh in unleashing economic forces, because of which India was enjoying a "high stature" in the world polity.

The first black US President also hailed India's democratic and diverse character.

"India is full of diversity and energy and is complex just like the USA," Obama said.

Obama said the US sees India as a global partner and together the two countries can play a critical part in meeting the challenges of 21st century like climate change, science and innovation.



G20 adds $500 billion to IMF funds
London The G20 on Thursday tripled the International Monetary Fund's resources, adding $500 billion for a total of $750 billion, giving it more firepower and putting it centre stage in the battle against global financial crisis.

A G20 summit of developed and developing countries also agreed to support a general allocation of $250 billion worth of IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to IMF member countries to boost liquidity at a time when credit markets are frozen.

IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn declared the G20 decision to boost resources and support more economic monitoring by the IMF meant that the Fund would play a bigger role as guardian of the global financial system.

Just a year ago, the IMF was struggling f relevance and respect for failing to sound the alarm on lax oversight and reckless lending by the United States.

Many developing countries also complained that the IMF did not publicly reprimand rich countries for the sort of poor oversight that would probably have drawn stern rebuke, had it taken place in an emerging market.

"The IMF is back," Strauss-Kahn declared. "Today you see the proof," he said, adding that the Fund was back not only as an economic forecaster but also as an institution that provides policy advice and monitors member countries' economies.

The increase in IMF resources includes money from the European Union, Japan, the United States, Canada and Norway. There was no formal breakdown provided of resources and which countries had committed funds.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said China would contribute $40 billion to the IMF, but did not say whether Beijing would lend through an IMF-issued SDR bond. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia said it had not committed funding but was studying options to support the Fund.

No intention to borrow from IMF: PM
London Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the global community that India is willing to increase its contribution to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) but does not intend to borrow any money from the multilateral lending agency.

"We do not visualise any need in the near future to go to the IMF ... We can consider contribution to (the) IMF in proportion to our quota," he said after the meeting of the G-20 leaders, who pledged to treble the resources of the IMF.

"As far as India is concerned ... the question arises that we should contribute (to the IMF)," Singh said when asked whether India, like Mexico, is planning to withdraw funds from the new facility approved at the G-20 Summit.

India, he added, has foreign exchange reserves of about USD 250 billion.

Expressing satisfaction at the inclusion of the country in the two key international committees, Singh said, "India has been recognised as a major economic player. It's a great achievement."

India has been made a member of the Financial Stability Forum (FSF) and the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision, the two key standard setting bodies.

Manmohan is Cong's PM nominee, not UPA's: Pawar
Mumbai NCP Chief Sharad Pawar created a flutter in political circles when he said that in the upcoming polls Manmohan Singh is Congress party’s nominee for Prime Minister's post but UPA’s nominee for the top job is yet to decided.

Hitting out at Congress for its criticism of his proposed visit to Bhubneshwar to attend a Third Front rally Sharad Pawar said on Friday that he does not need advice from anybody on how to conduct his political activities.

He also warmed up to Left parties saying he would not ignore their contribution to the stability of the UPA government for four and half years.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Pawar said Friday’s meeting at Bhubneshwar was organised by BJD with whom NCP has an alliance in Orissa and not the Left or Third Front.

"We are contesting one Lok Sabha and eight assembly seats in that state with the BJD. I am not a member of the Left or Third Front. Even CPI leader A B Bardhan said I was not member of the Third Front but was a personal friend," Pawar said.

Without naming Union Home Minister P Chidambaram who had appealed to him on Thursday not to share platform with Third Front as it was "opposed to Congress," Pawar said he did not require advice from anybody other than his own party on how to carry out his political activity.

Pawar said he was a member of the union cabinet for five years out of which for four and half years, the UPA government depended on the crucial support of the Left parties. "I will not ignore this contribution," he said.

Pawar said he will visit Orissa soon for a day to campaign for NCP and BJD candidates. He said he was supposed to fly to Bhubneshwar from Ojhar in Nashik but could not as the plane that was to fly him there developed a 'technical snag'.

Taj receives second e-mail threat

Mumbai Days after receiving a threat e-mail originating from Pakistan, another such mail was received by the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace and Tower on March 31 threatening to carry out an explosion, police officials said.

"The e-mail was received by Hotel Taj in Mumbai on its official e-mail ID and has been traced to Pakistan," they said.

The mail was unsigned and stated that an explosion would be carried out without specifying the date, the officials said.

"The e-mail ID from which the mail was sent seemed to have been created recently," they said.

This is the second threat e-mail received by the hotel, one of the sites of the November 26 terror strikes, the earlier one received by the Chennai unit of the hotel chain.

One wing of the hotel, the Heritage Taj Palace, is under renovation following the terror strikes while the other wing is operational.

Security had been heightened at the hotel following the receipt of the first threat e-mail.

The earlier mail, which was also unsigned, was also traced to Pakistan and police authorities had said they were carrying out investigations.

PM’s statement to the press at the conclusion of G-20 Summit

New Delhi : April 3, 2009

Following is the text of statement of the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to the press at the conclusion of G-20 Summit at London on April 2nd, 2009:

1. We met in London at a significant moment for the world economy and therefore for the world as a whole. I am grateful to Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the initiative that he has taken to host this second Summit of leaders of the G-20, and for the excellent arrangements that were made for our meetings.

2. The purpose of this Summit meeting was to take forward the search for solutions to the economic crisis facing the global economy today. The world is going though the worst recession since the Great Depression. We have fared much better than others though we are also affected. This is a global crisis requiring global solutions.

3. Earlier today and yesterday evening, we discussed various ways in which the crisis can be addressed. All countries have used monetary policy. An effective fiscal stimulus is also being resorted to by all major economies. There was agreement that credit flows to developing countries also must be restored. There was also agreement that we must tackle the crisis in a way which does not create other problems for the future. For instance, protectionism or restrictions on the free flow of trade and persons would be counter productive. Nor can development be halted or sacrificed in the search for solutions to the financial crisis. Hence the need for special attention to the needs of developing countries.

4. I was happy to note that our views received wide acceptance and support.

5. We emphasised the need to make good the decline that has taken place in capital flows to developing countries by providing adequate resources to the international financial institutions. I am happy to say that the G-20 have agreed to expand the resources of the IMF and the ADB and to also bring forward the quota review in the IMF. The leaders have also agreed to a fresh issue of SDRs. These are positive decisions. Together they involve a massive provision of $ 1.1 trillion tar emerging market economies. India does not need IMF funding but we have been in favour of expanding IMF resources as this will help developing countries that need assistance. It will restore confidence about emerging markets.

6. We also discussed and agreed on broad direction for improvements in regulatory and supervisory structure for the world’s financial system. These will take time to take effect but they are very important. They will be carried forward by the Financial Stability Forum (FSF) and the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision, the two key standard setting bodies. India is now a member of both bodies. Broadening representation in these bodies is an important improvement. The directions of the reform of financial regulation and supervision that have been agreed are in line with our own thinking in India.

7. This meeting has shown the utility of the G-20 Leaders’ process, and we took forward to the next Summit meeting of G-20 leaders in the second half of the year, and to the early implementation of what has been agreed today. There is a continuing need to redefine the role of our institutions of global economic governance to deal with the problems of today and to reflect contemporary realities.

8. As you know, I also had an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown yesterday, where we reviewed our bilateral relationship and discussed ways of taking India-UK relations forward. India and the UK enjoy a close partnership in diverse fields of human endeavour. We are determined to and confident of carrying this partnership forward.

9. Earlier this afternoon I met with President Barack Obama of the United States of America. This was our first meeting and was marked by exceptional warmth and cordiality. We reviewed our bilateral relations. I thanked President Obama for all that he has done in the US Senate and outside in the past few years to make possible the transformation of India-US relations, and to bring to fruition our civil nuclear initiative. Today we discussed several positive and constructive steps to take the India-US global partnership forward.

10. We discussed regional and global issues, including the threat that terrorism emanating from our nei9hbourhood poses to all free societies, and the international efforts that are required to deal with this problem. We had a significant convergence of views and approaches in this regard. President Obama informed me of the new comprehensive US strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. I welcomed his clear enunciation of the problems and the goals. India will continue to play a constructive role, working to build peace and stability in our periphery.

11. I leave London satisfied that my bilateral and other meetings have been productive and useful, and that the 0-20 Leaders Summit has shown a way forward. The process of overcoming the global crisis will not be easy. Given the goodwill and the meeting of minds among leaders that was possible in London over the last two days, the world has a basis to begin solving the crisis. The international community can and must work together to do so.

Statement of Finance Ministry on Inflation

New Delhi : April 2, 2009

Annual (year-on-year) rate of inflation remained stable at 0.3 per cent for the week ended March 21, 2009, though higher by 4 basis points relative to the week ended March 14. The corresponding inflation rate in 2007-08 was 7.9 per cent.

Year-on-year Inflation by Commodity groups

The change in inflation rates in the current week by commodity groups is thus:

i. In ‘primary articles’, inflation remained stable at 3.9 per cent in the week under reference, though it fell by 9 basis points relative to the earlier week. In ‘food articles’, inflation fell to 6.3 per cent from 7.1 per cent in the previous week. In ‘non-food articles’, inflation increased to (-) 1.1 per cent compared to (-) 2.8 per cent last week. In ‘minerals’, the rate of decline continued steady at (-) 1.2 per cent for the fifth consecutive week since the week ended February 14, 2009.

ii. In ‘fuel and power’, inflation was steady at (-) 6.1 per cent in the current week, though higher by 5 basis points compared to the previous week.

iii. In ‘manufactured products’, inflation rate increased to 1.3 per cent in the current week, from 1.2 per cent last week. Inflation in most sub-groups declined or remained steady relative to rates recorded in the previous week. Notable exceptions have been in food products (oilcakes and tea & coffee processing), in beverages (soft drinks), rubber & plastics (plastic products) and non-metallic minerals products (cement).

Inflation in the combined food index (wt = 25.43 per cent) for the week ended March 21, 2009 decreased to 6.0 per cent compared to 6.2 per cent last week, due to decrease in inflation in primary food articles, particularly vegetables, though manufactured food products recorded increase.

CPI monthly inflation rates

Inflation rate measured by the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) decreased to 9.6 per cent in February 2009 vs. 10.5 per cent in January, in line with the decline observed in the CPIs for both Agricultural Labour (CPI-AL) and Rural Labour (CPI-RL). The corresponding monthly WPI inflation rate in February 2009 was 3.6 per cent (provisionally).

Conditional talks will take us backwards: Pak to India

Islamabad/London Pakistan made it clear on Friday that it would not accept any pre-condition for resumption of the stalled peace process with India.
Islamabad made its stand clear while reacting to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assertion that for the resumption of dialogue, Pakistan must meet the "minimum pre-condition" of ensuring that its soil will not be used for terror activities against India.

"We should move forward and not backwards. By putting conditions, we would be going backward," said Pakistan Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar.

Asked about the pre-condition set by Singh, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said, "When we have a dialogue we cannot have pre-conditions."

Babar insisted that Pakistan had "fully cooperated and is still cooperating" with India in investigating the Mumbai attacks to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Addressing a press conference at the end of the G-20 Summit last evening, Singh said, "India is willing to discuss bilaterally all outstanding issues, including Kashmir. It (Pakistan) has to convince us that it is absolutely sincere in bringing to book the culprits of the attack on Mumbai."

India put the composite dialogue on hold following the Mumbai attacks on November 26 that killed over 180 people. New Delhi has blamed Pakistan-based elements, including the banned Lashker-e-Taiba group for the strike and urged Islamabad to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Singh made it clear that discussions with Pakistan cannot proceed if hundreds of people are being killed, as had happened in the case of the Mumbai attacks.

The Indian leader said that Pakistan must do everything to bring all culprits involved in the Mumbai terror attack to the book. "The ball is in the court of Pakistan."

Singh was speaking after his maiden meeting with US President Barack Obama during which they discussed developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan and cooperation in countering forces of terror.

Obama later said terrorism emanating from Pakistan figured in the discussions as "obviously, we are very concerned about extremists and terrorists who have made camps in the border regions of Pakistan as well as Afghanistan."

At the same time, the US President pushed for Indo-Pak dialogue. "It may make sense to create an effective dialogue between India and Pakistan in this nuclear age and at a time when perhaps the greatest enemy" of the two countries should be poverty, Obama said.

Pakistan welcomed Obama's call for Indo-Pak dialogue. "We have already called for the resumption of the composite dialogue process without any conditions," Babar said.

In order to move forward, talks between the two countries should be "resumed at the point at which they were suspended" in the wake of last year's Mumbai terror attacks, he added.

Basit said, "We can't agree more with President Obama as we have been saying the resumption of the composite dialogue is absolutely important and necessary for cooperative engagement and addressing all issues bedevilling our relations. We support Obama's comments.

Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir had no choice but to expel the western "aid" organizations that had merged with the American propaganda machine aimed at regime change in Khartoum. Obama operatives like UN Ambassador Susan Rice have for years been "eager to blockade Sudan's ports" and to launch "selective" bombing raids against Sudan. When imperial doctrine claims the right to intervene whenever disasters overtake sovereign countries - and proceeds to create and exacerbate those disasters - then no government is safe against regime change. President Obama "appears to be fine-tuning a `humanitarian' interventionist doctrine that is applicable to any point on the planet."

Any government in the world that believes it has been targeted for regime change by the United States and its allies would be foolish to allow western-based nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to operate freely in its territory. When Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir evicted 13 western NGOs from his country last month, he was responding quite rationally to the clear threat of so-called "humanitarian" military intervention by the U.S. under the pretext of "rescuing" Sudanese in the war-torn Darfur region.

Under the Obama administration, a military interventionist doctrine is rapidly crystallizing around the concept of "Responsibility to Protect," or R2P, which holds that nations have a responsibility to forcibly intervene when a state is judged to be unwilling or unable to protect or otherwise fulfill its responsibilities to its people – responsibilities that can be broadly or narrowly defined. United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice and Samantha Power, a member of Obama's National Security Council, are leading advocates of a broad and unilateralist interpretation of R2P. Both are very close to President Obama, and can be assumed to reflect his thinking on foreign policy. And both are implacably hostile to Omar Al-Bashir's government in Sudan. Rice is eager to blockade Sudan's ports and to launch "selective" bombing raids.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also a hawk on Sudan, who talks of enforcing no-fly zones over Darfur. That's the same policy the U.S. pursued against Iraq in the interim between the 1991 and 2003 wars. The logic leads inexorably to incremental invasion and regime change in Sudan.The crisis exploded when Bashir was indicted for "crimes against humanity" – a step below formal charges of genocide – by the International Criminal Court (ICC), a body whose prosecutorial urges seem limited to Africa. As reported by IRIN, a news service of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:

"Almost the entire Arab and African world supports Sudan against the ICC, arguing it is a biased and political tool that only targets Africans and infringes sovereignty."

The African Union and the Arab League have long opposed ICC action against Sudan, on national sovereignty grounds and because an indictment could have been predicted to lead to disruptions in international aid to Darfuran refugees. President Obama has dispatched a U.S. Air Force general as his special envoy to Sudan to deal with, in Obama's words, the "immediate crisis prompted by the Khartoum government's expulsion of non-governmental organizations that are providing aid to displaced persons inside of Sudan." Obama is reaching for the heights of hypocrisy.

First, the United States is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court, fearing that its own numerous and constant violations of international law might land an American president in the dock, one day. Second, the entire purpose of U.S. policy toward Sudan is to create a crisis in hopes of toppling the regime and transforming the largest country in Africa – or big, dismembered chunks of it – into a client of the United States. Susan Rice can't wait for her "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Sudan" moment to arrive. Obama's envoy/general would like to get an audience with his Sudanese military counterparts, and talk coup.

The American search for a pretext for "humanitarian" military intervention is perfectly understood by the Darfur rebel groups seeking to topple Bashir, who control the refugee camps in Darfur. No sooner had President Bashir kicked the western NGOs out, than "activists" in the 88,000-person Kalma refugee camp organized a "strike" against accepting aid from United Nations relief organizations. As the Los Angeles Times reported on March 21:
"'We want the international [aid groups] back,' said Ali Abdel Khaman Tahir, the chief sheik at Kalma, speaking by telephone because the government is refusing to allow journalists in the camp, which is on the edge of Nyala, the capital of Southern Darfur province.

"'If we allow them to distribute the food, then the government will be able to say to the world that everything is OK in Kalma,' said Mubarak Shafi, a camp activist. `We want all the other problems solved first.'"

The "problems" the "activist" refers to are political, ultimately devolving to autonomy or independence for the region. The rebel groups are intimately involved with U.S. allies in the region and western individuals and NGOs attached to the aid effort. In accordance with Washington's wishes, the rebel-led refugees demanded that their pipelines to western media, the NGOs, be allowed back in. Food and medicine were not the issue. Nor is refugee relief a priority of the Obama administration. It's all about regime change.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a major rebel faction, has offices in Tel Aviv. ABC News reports that "Israel has conducted three military strikes against targets in Sudan since January in an effort to prevent what were believed to be Iranian weapons shipments from reaching Hamas in the Gaza Strip." The alleged Gaza/Iran connection is for western consumption. In fact, Israel is in the vanguard of U.S. clients, including Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Chad, that connive to dissolve the Sudanese state.

When "humanitarian" intervention and "Responsibility to Protect" are the watchwords of superpower imperial destabilization policies, no targeted nation can afford to host western "aid" groups that feed the propaganda machines of aggressors. Ethnic and other conflicts in Sudan are quite complex (see Mahmood Mamdani, "What's Really Happening In Darfur?" BAR), and the numbers and nature of mortality in Darfur are in serious dispute everywhere except in the U.S. corporate media. The Washington narrative is constructed for the sole purpose of overthrowing the Sudanese government. States will do whatever is necessary to preserve themselves, and in Sudan's case, that meant the western echo-operatives in the "aid" industry in Darfur had to go. The U.S. knew full well that its destabilization campaign against Sudan would ultimately achieve just such a result.

The United Nations has also adopted a form of R2P, which authorizes the UN Security Council to intervene in the affairs of individual states when "national authorities [are] manifestly failing to protect their populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity." But the United States cannot count on manipulating the UN Security Council, which includes China and Russia, to achieve its narrow imperialist goals – in this case, regime change in Sudan. The Americans are unilateralists. They can't even bring themselves to join the International Criminal Court – although they revel in its indictments of Africans. Obama has not broken the American mold, but rather, appears to be fine-tuning a "humanitarian" interventionist doctrine that is applicable to any point on the planet where crises can be exploited to create chaos worthy of the Lone Ranger's armed attentions. Call it Disaster Imperialism.


Europe is a Riot

The collapse of the economy may presage violence across the continent.

Some time ago, I asked a man in a bar where he was from.
“I’m European,” he replied.
“Yes,” I said, “but where are you from?”
“I’m European,” he insisted.
In fact, he was obviously German, and perhaps only a German would have answered in this fashion. There are certain Germans with an excessive sensitivity to their country’s historical crimes for whom it might have seemed like the beginning of the slippery slope to world domination to have replied, “I’m German.”
But only someone with a cloth ear could fail to detect the false note in my interlocutor’s reply. While many people will admit that they are European, few—apart, perhaps, from the deracinated bureaucrats on the Brussels gravy train—will admit to feeling European or identifying viscerally with Europe as a political entity. While many people support membership in the European Union on the grounds that it is good for their country, very few do so on the grounds that it is good for Europe. Ask not what you can do for Europe; ask, rather, what Europe can do for you.
Still, the pretense continues that the EU is more than a marriage of convenience born of the pan-European wars of the 20th century and sustained by the continent’s ongoing decline in importance. The “European project,” as some writers who fall halfway between intellectual and apparatchik are inclined to call it, is sometimes presented to the public as if it were a grand utopian experiment to make all men brothers. Just as Jehovah’s Witnesses hand out pamphlets portraying lions as very large, presumably vegetarian, domestic cats and grizzly bears as cuddly friends of children—once, of course, everyone has become a Jehovah’s Witness—so Eurocrats and Europhiles are inclined to talk of common destinies, eternal friendships, and the like. The Portuguese lion will lie down with the Estonian lamb, and all will be well.
Alas, current economic circumstances seem to have interrupted this pleasing daydream and introduced unpleasant realities. When you’re coasting along and financial growth seems to be the natural order of things, you can dream what you like. But the moment a contraction sets in, when it is a question of manning the economic lifeboats as it were, everyone wakes up quicker than you can say “Abandon ship!”
When French president Nicolas Sarkozy announced a large state loan to ailing French carmakers Renault and PSA-Citroen, everyone understood what it meant. Of course, Sarkozy said that it was a commercial loan at 6 percent interest. But the question naturally arises as to why the French banks—which are a lot less unprofitable than their American counterparts—did not then offer their assistance. In plain language, the loan was a temporary subsidy for companies that, in the normal course of business, would have gone bankrupt. While there is much to be said in favor of such a helping hand in difficult times, it cannot truthfully be presented as a purely commercial decision or transaction.
The real problem, however, was that Sarkozy also suggested that if the companies were to close factories anywhere, they should close them abroad and not in France. What, then, of the common European home? According to the ideology of Europe, it should be a matter of sublime political indifference to leaders where the jobs in commercial companies are located. Renault and Citroen-PSA should have their factories wherever it is in their commercial interest to have them and nowhere else. Almost by definition, many of them would not be in France. But Sarkozy is president of France, not of anywhere else, and his electors, with the lamentable national parochialism that is still prevalent everywhere, care more about what happens in France than what happens anywhere else. They wouldn’t think much of a French president who lent taxpayers’ money to preserve jobs in the Czech Republic.
Stresses and strains are appearing across Europe, resuscitating the prospects of political extremism. In Greece, the riots sparked by the police shooting of a 15-year-old boy in December 2008, which were the worst in the country’s recent history, were clearly worsened and prolonged by hundreds of young anarchists, many of whom carried the black and red anarchist flag (the colors also of Castro’s movement and the Sandinistas).
Although nominally of the far Left, the rioters could just as well have been of the far Right. The situation of Greece in some ways now resembles that of Romania in the 1920s. The number of university graduates rose in Romania fivefold during that decade, but there were few jobs for them, so there were many young men either underemployed or employed in positions that they felt degrading for their level of education. Greece is in precisely this situation now, with large and rising numbers of educated and unemployed or underemployed young men. In Romania, such young men tended to join the radical, anti-Semitic Iron Guard, which blamed Jews for everything. No one should doubt the possibility of a similar reaction in Greece, with its half million illegal immigrants from Albania, the Middle East, and Africa, as economic deterioration continues and desperation grows. Of course, the economic conditions that the angry young men of Greece—who during the riots looked both fit and well dressed—are likely to experience would have made the young men of Romania in the 1920s deeply envious. But what counts is dashed hopes and frustrated expectations, not absolute levels of consumption.
It is not only in the peripheral economies of Europe that social conditions are auspicious for the development of extremist violence of one kind or another. France showed the way in 2005, and life in the banlieues of Paris continues to be a slow-motion riot, in which cars are burnt out every night.
In 2006, relatively privileged students rioted in the Boulevard Saint-Germain when the prime minister of the time, Dominique de Villepin, tried to ease the labor market for the unemployed youth of the banlieues. The position of the students was akin to that of the white miners in South Africa, who struck in 1922 when the mine-owners replaced them with black workers and the South African Communist Party supported the strikers with the slogan “Workers of the World, Unite for a White South Africa!” To use black miners was to increase profits and therefore exploitation.
The combustibility of the situation in France was further shown by the nasty little riot in the Gard du Nord in 2007, when a young man was arrested after exercising his inalienable right to punch two ticket inspectors in the face as they questioned his equally inalienable right to jump over the ticket barrier without paying his fare. This riot was in some respects more worrying than those of 2005, in that young men from ethnic minorities rioted in the center of Paris, which they had not dared to do two years earlier, even at the height of the unrest.
In 2007, young Germans showed in Rostock that they still knew how to be violent. One thousand people were injured during the riots that preceded the meeting of G8 leaders there. The troublemakers did not look as though they would have many qualms about instigating much worse violence. And all this before the economic crisis had even made itself felt, when youth unemployment was only 11.2 percent in Germany and 19.2 percent in France.
But it is in Britain that the potential for violent social unrest is the greatest, for thanks to the corrupt improvidence of prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, Britain is not only the hardest hit of any of the major European countries by the crisis, but its social conditions are the worst. If the government had actually wanted social unrest and violence in the event of a severe economic downturn, it could hardly have arranged things better.
During all the years of so-called growth—a mirage, of course, based on easy credit, asset value inflation, and indebtedness both public and private—from 1997 to 2007, both the proportion, and latterly the absolute numbers, of British-born adults in work declined, while the numbers of immigrant workers increased. In the last ten years, almost all new employment, at least 40 percent of it in the public sector, has been taken by immigrants, while the number of native-born unemployed in receipt of permanent social-security benefits of one kind or another has remained constant. They have simply been transferred from the list of unemployed to the list of sick, in order to substantiate the government’s bogus claim to have reduced unemployment. In the process, the government has succeeded, in times of supposedly unprecedented prosperity, in producing 30 percent more invalids in contemporary Britain than the total of men wounded in World War I (many of whom recovered, unlike modern British invalids wounded by the welfare state).
At least 80 percent of the immigrants came from outside the European Union and, having been granted indefinite leave to stay, have created huge obligations upon the government toward them in the event of their unemployment, since they are most unlikely ever to return whence they came. As the tax base declines, so the expenditure obligations increase.
As if this were not enough, the government has done all in its power to ensure that there are no forms of social solidarity that do not pass through a government department—it went to the trouble of de facto nationalizing all the major charities well before it nationalized the banks. Forty-two percent of British children are now born illegitimate, and at least 25 percent can expect to live in a single-parent household, while many others live with serial step-parents, which is perhaps worse still. This is not a form of family life that can exist on a mass scale without state subvention, which if suddenly withdrawn or greatly reduced would plunge large numbers of people into real poverty. It conduces to common criminality, which is now rampant in Britain.
In short, the British government behaved as if there were, and could be, no tomorrow. Brown said there would be no more boom and bust under his management, which in a sense is correct: he has made sure that there won’t be a boom for a long time to come. In the meantime, the stage has been set for social conflict on a wide scale. The government might find itself unable to maintain the living standards of the very large proportion of the population that it has made dependent on it, in which case the already large criminal population will find many willing recruits. Ethnic and cultural strife, and radical xenophobia, will become evident as different “communities” press their claims for support in an increasingly zero-sum game. There have already been strikes protesting the use of foreign labor, even when it comes from the European Union, in oil refineries and power stations, suggesting that European law requiring freedom of movement of labor will either become a dead letter or a cause of strife. Either way, it does not look good for the “European project.”
Not long ago, I had occasion to stay for a few weeks in a once-industrial town in the north of England. The last steel mills had just closed down. I was surprised by the elegance of much of the early 19th-century architecture, now completely overwhelmed by the brutalism of the 1960s and ’70s. The prematurely middle-aged spent their time looking for secondhand clothes in charity shops. Pawnshops had also made a big comeback. Feral young men with an expression of urban predation on their faces stood around on street corners in nylon tracksuits and hoods, muttering f---ing this and f---ing that to one another. About half the people in the street were unemployed young immigrants, mainly of Middle Eastern origin, on the lookout for a bit of small-scale trafficking. Some took advantage of free Internet access in the public library—a concrete building aesthetically suitable as the headquarters of the Stasi—to look at inflammatory political sites or to search for women.
I have seen the future, and it’s riots.

US Refusal to Participate in Durban Review Conference: African Americans and People Color Speak for Ourselves!

The election of Barack Obama as US president was an important development in the direction of democracy. It represented an ideological blow against the hold of racism and white supremacy on national political elections. Many Blacks and People of Color worldwide have great hopes that his election among other things, represents a leadership willing to take a strong stand against racist US and global policies, systems and governments.

The refusal of the Obama administration to participate in the Durban Review Conference on racism to be held in Geneva on April 20 to 24, 2009, without preconditions that restricts the conference from addressing the issue of Reparations and the racist and genocidal nature of Israel's oppression of Palestine, is truly a big disappointment. It not only departs from one of the important meanings of the Obama election - unifying a political majority in opposition to racism; it represents a total disregard for the collective agreement of the vast majority of the world on the issue of Reparations and is an act of complicity with violations of human rights as stated in the United Nation's Charter

While the United States and western governments boycott the Durban Review Conference, the impact of the international economic crisis continues to deepen the historic vestiges of centuries of racism, devastating poverty, and all forms of discrimination and injustice upon People of Color inside the US and throughout the world. It is a major cause of the ethnic cleansing which we have witnessed in parts of Africa, resulting in the deaths of millions.

Little attention has been given to the fact that in the U.S. alone, it was Black and Latino communities who were the targets of the unjust and discriminatory subprime loan schemes of Wall St. and the financial markets. These loans preyed upon the legitimate aspirations of millions of Black and Latino families for adequate housing and home ownership. Various analyses of the housing market crisis indicate that Black and Latino communities are disproportionately impacted and will "lose between $164 billion and $213 billion" as a result of predatory lending, thrusting thousands into economic crisis, homelessness, poverty, devastation.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) reports that women will also be disproportionately impacted by the economic crisis, exacerbating the historic elements of gender based discrimination world-wide. Increases in unemployment wo rld-wide will hit women workers the hardest. According to the ILO Bureau for Gender Equality, "women's lower employment rates, weaker control over property and resources, concentration in informal and vulnerable forms of employment with lower earnings, and less social protection, all place women in a weaker position than men to weather the crisis".

Increased racially motivated and gender based violence is being documented across the globe as the downturns from the economic crisis linger in developing as well as developed countries. Every continent has seen a rise in violence against women, gays, immigrants, and non majority nationalities. "Rising inequality can result in an increase in racial bias for scapegoating or advancing xenophobic and isolationist tendencies", the reports say.

The world-wide struggle against the concrete manifestations of racism and discrimination were the central focus of the 2001 World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) in the first place. Without the US and other western governments correcting their egregious refusal to officially participate in WCAR and now the Durban Review process, the Obama Administration turns it's back upon hundreds of millions of the oppressed and disadvantaged around the world who continue to suffer at the hands of the greed and misconduct of the racist, misogynist, rich and powerful. This is the true cost of the defense of Israel at the expense of the Palestinian people and all the oppressed sectors and communities around the world.

The historical invasions by Western and US governments of the lands and genocide of the indigenous Peoples of Color; the kidnapping, sale and super-exploitation of African slave and wage labor; and the forcing of women to replenish the labor force and to work in the home without pay or rights over their own bodies, have left its imprint embedded in the societies of the oppressed as well as the oppressor nations throughout the world.

We are witnessing the speed of the US government in granting trillions of dollars of the people's funds, to bail out the banks and cor porations which are part of the historical chain perpetuating the oppression and violation of human rights against Africans, African descendents and Peoples of Color nations and communities. Yet the US refuses to address the demand for reparations by the victims of oppression, as an essential component of the equality and democracy it claims to champion inside the US and internationally.

We have submitted petitions and made appeals to the US government to participate in this important conference, without success. Its participation in a preparatory meeting, gives a false impression that the US government is really committed to ending racism inside the US and around the globe. In the US's refusal to attend this conference, we see a continuation of the policies of the previous administrations, magnified by the Bush administration, of refusing to be accountable to democratic standards and decisions arrive at by the UN and other international bodies.

We therefore call on the Durban Review Conference to recognize the voices of African American and People of Color delegations and coalitions from organizations and social movements throughout the US in this important deliberation, to arrive at a report that frames, mandates, informs, reviews and reinforces accountability to international conventions and standards on human rights.

US unemployment at 26-year high
Washington The unemployment rate in the world's largest economy the US touched a 26-year-high of 8.5 per cent in March, pushing the total number of job losses since the recession began in December 2007 to 5.1 million.
The data released by the US Department of Labor showed that a staggering 6,63,000 jobs were lost in March.

During the same period, the jobless rate soared to a 26-year-high of 8.5 per cent from 8.1 per cent. Officially, America entered into recession in December 2007.

“Non-farm payroll employment continued to decline sharply in March (-663,000), and the unemployment rate rose from 8.1 to 8.5 per cent.

“... Since the recession began in December 2007, 5.1 million jobs have been lost, with almost two-thirds (3.3 million) of the decrease occurring in the last 5 months,” the Department of Labor said in a statement today.

In yet another stark reminder of the worsening economic situation, the number of unemployed people jumped by 6,94,000 to 13.2 million last month.

With the recession deepening, many of the companies are slashing jobs as part of their efforts to cut down on costs.

The statement added that over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed people has grown by about 5.3 million.

During March, the rate of jobless for adult men stood at 8.8 per cent while it was 7 per cent for adult women. Last month, the unemployment rate for whites reached 7.9 per cent, Hispanics (11.4 per cent), blacks (13.3 per cent) and teenagers (21.7 per cent).

According to the Labor Department, the number of long-term unemployed ¿ those jobless for 27 weeks or more ¿ shot up to 3.2 million over the month. It has risen by about 1.9 million since December 2007.

About the unemployment situation in March, Hilda L Solis, the US Secretary of Labor said “today's numbers show that we have more work to do”.

“The Labor Department continues to actively support workers during this difficult time. We have provided billions of dollars to increase the level of unemployment benefits and extend their duration,” Solis added.

The Secretary of Labor said the government has provided states with USD 7 billion in incentives to expand the reach of unemployment insurance, in addition to distributing USD 4 billion to increase the opportunities for workers to receive training.

Solis noted that Americans who have lost their jobs worry about paying the mortgage, keeping their health insurance and paying tuition fees.

“Families across our country are stressed and hurting, and they are at the center of the administration's efforts to provide real relief and opportunity for the future,” Solis said.

The ADP National Employment report released on Wednesday revealed that private sector companies in the US slashed a staggering 7,42,000 jobs.

“Non-farm private employment decreased 7,42,000 from February to March 2009 on a seasonally adjusted basis,” the report said.

Further, the estimated change in employment from January to February was revised downwards by 9,000 to 7,06,000 from a decline of 6,97,000, it added.

For the week ended March 28, the initial claims for unemployment benefits in the US soared to 6,69,000, the highest in 26 years. The claims for jobless benefits from the state climbed by 12,000 to 6,69,000.



'Govt not responsible for CBI clean chit to Tytler'
Thiruvanananthapuram Defence Minister A K Antony said on Friday that the Government had no role in the CBI's decision to close the probe against his party colleague Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, but said the Sikh community had a right to express their sentiments.

"It is not the Union Government's decision. The report was given by the CBI," he said in response to questions on the issue at a meet-the-press programme in Thiruvananthapuram.

"On the other side, the Sikh community is naturally wounded. The 1984 incident was a tragedy. Their wounds are still there. So, they have a right to express their apprehension," he said, when asked about the community being anguished over CBI's decision to give a clean chit to Tytler.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's unemployment rate jumped to 8.5 percent in March, the highest since late 1983, as a wide swath of employers eliminated 663,000 jobs. It's fresh evidence of the toll the recession has inflicted on America's workers, and economists say there's no relief in sight.

If part-time and discouraged workers are factored in, the unemployment rate would have been 15.6 percent in March, the highest on records dating to 1994, according to Labor Department data released Friday.

The average work week in March dropped to 33.2 hours, a new record low. Since the recession began in December 2007, the economy has lost a net total of 5.1 million jobs, with almost two-thirds of the losses occurring in the last five months.

"It's an ugly report and April is going to be equally as bad," predicted Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com.

The deterioration in the jobs market and a worse-than-expected reading of the strength of the services sector in March come despite a few hopeful signs recently that the recession - now the longest since World War II - could be easing.

Orders placed with U.S. factories actually rose in February, ending a six straight months of declines, the government reported Thursday. Earlier in the week, there was better-than-expected reports on construction spending and pending home sales. And last week a report showed that consumer spending - an engine of the economy - rose in February for the second month in a row - after a half-year of declines.

The job market traditionally doesn't rebound until well after a recovery starts. But the stock market generally bottoms out before the economy, and stocks have been rising for three weeks.

The Dow Jones industrial average spent most of Thursday over 8,000, the first time that happened since early February, before adding 216 points to close at 7,978. The Dow dropped about 15 points in afternoon trading.

Last month's tally of job losses was slightly higher than the 654,000 that economists expected. The rise in the unemployment rate matched expectations.

Employers cut 651,000 jobs in February when the jobless rate was 8.1 percent, the same as initially estimated. January's job losses, however, were revised much higher, to 741,000 from 655,000. Figuring prominently into that downgrade: much deeper job cuts in construction and professional and business services. January marked the worst payroll losses since the fall of 1949.

The number of unemployed people climbed to 13.2 million in March. In addition, the number of people forced to work part time for "economic reasons" rose by 423,000 to 9 million. Those are people who would like to work full time but whose hours were cut back or were unable to find full-time work.

Looking forward, economists expect monthly job losses continuing for most - if not all of - this year.

However, they are hoping that payroll reductions in the current quarter won't be as deep as the roughly 685,000 average monthly job losses in the January-March period.

In the best-case scenario, employment losses in the present quarter would be about half that pace, some economists said. That scenario partly assumes the economy won't be shrinking nearly as much in the present quarter.

But as the economic downturn eats into their sales and profits, companies are laying off workers and resorting to other cost-saving measures. Those include holding down hours, and freezing or cutting pay, to survive the storm.

Job losses were widespread last month. Construction companies cut 126,000 jobs. Factories axed 161,000. Retailers got rid of nearly 50,000. Professional and business services eliminated 133,000. Leisure and hospitality reduced employment by 40,000. Even the government cut jobs - 5,000 of them.

Education and health care were the few industries showing any job gains.

Meanwhile, the services index from the Institute for Supply Management, a Tempe, Ariz.-based trade group of purchasing executives, fell to 40.8 last month from 41.6 in February. Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected the index to edge up to 42.

Any reading below 50 indicates contraction.

The report, released Friday, is based on a survey of the institute's members in 18 industries and covers such indicators as new orders, employment and inventories. About three-quarters of Americans work in service-providing industries such as hotels, retail, education and health care.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recession could end later this year, setting the stage for a recovery next year, if the government is successful in bolstering the banking system. Banks have been clobbered by the worst housing, credit and financial crises to hit the country since the 1930s.

Even if the recession ends this year, the economy will remain frail, analysts said. Companies will have little appetite to ramp up hiring until they feel the economy is truly out of the woods and any recovery has staying power.

Given that, many economists predict the unemployment rate will hit 10 percent at the end of this year. The Fed says unemployment will remain elevated into 2011.

Economists say the job market may not get back to normal - meaning a 5 percent unemployment rate - until 2013.

"There's going to quite a long haul before you see the jobless rate head down," said Bill Cheney, chief economist at John Hancock Financial Services.

To brace the economy, the Fed has slashed a key bank lending rate to an all-time low and has embarked on a series of radical programs to inject billions of dollars into the financial system.

And the Obama administration had launched a multi-pronged strategy to turn the economy around. Its $787 billion stimulus package includes money that will flow to states for public works projects, help them defray budget cuts, extend unemployment benefits and boost food stamp benefits.

The administration also is counting on programs to prop up financial companies and reduce home foreclosures to help turn the economy around.

Still, skittish employers announced more job layoffs this week.

3M Co., the maker of Scotch tape, Post-It Notes and other products, said it's cutting another 1,200 jobs, or 1.5 percent of its work force, because of the global economic slump. Healthcare products distributor Cardinal Health Inc. said it would eliminate 1,300 positions, or about 3 percent of its work force, and semiconductor equipment maker KLA-Tencor Corp. said it will cut about 600 jobs, or 10 percent of its employees.

Ambedkartimes.com run by our Prem Chumber is completing a successful second year, let us all congratulate PremJi and to those who support this internet news site.

Ambedkartimes, is a modern and digital dalit media news that was started by Prem Chumber two years ago, an ardent Ambedkarite our brother, friend and a Buddhist who lives in Sacramento, CA. Premji recently started Ambedkartimes in Hindi language too (www.ambedkartimes.org).


It is important to recognize the hard work, dedication and forward looking mission of this website, like Prem Chumber there are numerous dalit/Ambedkarite/Buddhists who are doing their share in splintering the hindu media in India as well the world media, by taking dalit issues to the center stage on their own terms but not waiting for the established news groups.

The main news papers like Hindu, Indian Express, Times of India, Daily Thanthi, Deccan Herald and other similar such news groups in India are still following the biased and self centered policies, they seldom have any time to write about issues that are tarnishing the Indian society and the future of India. All these news groups cannot and will not focus on real issues, furthermore they outrightly ignore the dalit issues in particular. I said about this time and again in my upliftthem blogs, I am not going to change this stand on Indian media or the foreign media who writes about India. They all have the same approach, it is their nature, it is their very altruistic and bigotry nature and they often ignore to give due importance to dalit issues.

Unfortunately, those readers and internet visitors who cling to this modern news systems like internet, blogs and message groups are also doing the same mundane things in their writings, these young writers do share those traditional bigoted approach like the News Papers, however there are few exceptions that you will notice elsewhere in this editorial.


What is happening in the Digital world?

Ever since internet and IT became part of our lives, there is a tremendous transformation of our communication system, communication media, interpersonal communications and also in the press and TV media. This is a great challenge for the traditional media, so they have all facing this challenges some of them make it, and others are loosing the battle in this changing times?.

But, for the right thinking individuals and groups, this changing times are a superb opportunity to grab and boot the conventional news, as the consequence is our emergence of digital media, which is sending shrills into the spines of shivering "Traditional Media."


This is true as far as Indian national news media groups concerned, certainly also true in the international media networks like New York Times, Times,Observer or Gaurdian like news. It is the modern bloggers and the internet news sites that are making tremendoous progress steadily among the readers, just ask New York times or other such giant news moguls about how much revenue they are loosing from advertisement and subscriptions, you will know the truth. Ironic, is in't??. This is happening at the price of these news media carrying mundane, celebrity driven and worthless news by ignoring what people actually need and what this society needs in terms of news on a day to day basis.


The traditional Indian news groups like Hindu, Indian Express and Times of India and the likes are fully staffed by hindu people who are to the most part are chauvinistic, casteistic people, who cannot think out of their little "Frog's Well" to say so!?.

First of all, the newsmen and woman in India have this eternal bias and bigoted heads, but the other issue is the "Fear of loosing everything they accumulated and squandered by betraying the society and poor people?. If dalits move into the media, and if they become media moguls in India, which will be the disastrous end to all those who are running the news group. There will be hardly any non hindus (majority Indians such as the Shudras, Bcs and Sc, Sts) will buy the traditional media), this means only 15% of the population of India who will care about the traditional media, the rest of 85% the real non-hindus will go for the insightful dalit media.

Dalit Media, oh yea?, what is dalit media anyways?. I am quite sure there is lot of Indians including some dalits asking this question or pondering over whatever is Dalit Media is all about?.
Some of the Blogs and website that are challenging the traditional news papers are listed, these to the most part are run by dalits, except few but the few of them are genuine writers who seek attention to dalit issues (blogs such as: Ultra violet).
